I will grant you this: they don't appear to be the most committed Republicans. The new guy definitely seems to have been anti-Trump, while the first guy was plausibly just looking to be (in)famous. Reportedly he had been looking into when Biden would visit his area as well - it may not have mattered to him much which candidate he shot. Although tbf, Biden (and Harris) are less likely to have outdoor rallies that would be as easy to target. Trump is doing those because he doesn't like paying his bills to large indoor venues and he probably can't book as many as a result.

What they clearly aren't, however, is committed Democrats or leftists. First guy was a registered Republican. Other guy who voted Trump and then supported Tusli Gabbard (who is now part of Trump's campaign, basically) and then Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy, etc.

Unsurprisingly, people who do crazy things are mostly a bit crazy and don't fit into neat boxes. If they had standard Republican ideology, they probably would behave like standard Republicans and, you know, not try to shoot Trump.

I listened to most of the debate, and while I thought the Harris-Trump debate was a clear win for Harris, this was closer to a draw.

Vance prepared well and generally sounded convincing, even when he was spouting bullshit. Walz did fine, but like michio said, he was more defensive against Vance's rhetorical assault.

Vance couldn't bring himself to admit that Trump lost the 2020 election, and gave the biggest BS answer that Trump did a peaceful transfer of power of January 20th. Walz hit him pretty hard on that. Otherwise, this was mostly unremarkable, and I was hoping for a better performance from Walz.

I agree with Sam Seder and Emma that Harris' campaign strategy since the convention seems to have been more honey than vinegar (less accusations of "weirdness" and more "our opponents are misguided") but that the result was Vance (and by extension Trumpism) being allowed to appear far more sane and reasonable than reality.

All the talking heads kept pointing out that historically the VP debate has had zero impact on the race as if there is anything typical about the moment we're in now.

Yeah, Vance can talk. He's good at it, and he sounds so very sincere much of the time. It is hard to tell if he is lying, or if he simply doesn't know what he's talking about, some times. A lot of sales guys are like that. they can say pretty much anything with sincerity.
