Damn.
I mean, I knew it was bound to happen after such an incredibly good, long run, but the dude just seemed immortal. When I was a shifty-looking longhair, I saw him and Bobby Blue Bland at the Circle Star in San Carlos (which is also now gone and greatly mourned). I was an ill-dressed, skinny white kid among a crowd of well-dressed black folks. But I was in the front row, dammit, and he was fantastic.

RIP Marques Haynes
I was lucky enough to see Haynes play with the Globetrotters sometime in the late 1970s. By that time he was well into his 50s but was breathtakingly spectacular nonetheless.

I live about a mile off Marques Haynes Highway. I heard he was a Sand Springs, Oklahoma native.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
I didn't hear about Tanith Lee. I was on the road and all the news talked about was FIFA. I am bereft. First Pratchett, now her, and they say things come in threes.
Off to check that Robert Rankin is feeling well.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
It's a sad day when the deaths of two great nonagenarians of British cinema are announced— Ron Moody has gone too.
There's something odd about the Lee story though. He died on Sunday, yet the BBC page, Sir Christopher Lee: Screen legend dies aged 93, describes the news as "breaking".
Since the page is mostly obit, which in Sir Christopher's case must surely have lain pre-prepared and ready to be dusted off and produced with a confident flourish at a moment's notice, what is left to break? Unless someone (the family?) is deliberately keeping Auntie in the dark...

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Read the articles, mr thinks - the family kept it quiet until they had informed other family and friends. And (reading between the lines) the newspapers are a bit miffed about this.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
lol no u mr p!!!
It seems the BBC is under the impression that it is still (at 14:00 their time) not in possession of all the important details (else what does "breaking" mean*?). I am wondering why Auntie thinks the family are witholding salient facts from her.
*ETA: Okay, I've seen that rent-a-celeb tributes are being added to the page now. I guess that's what the entertainment media think constitutes unfolding drama

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
I am bereft, as you might imagine. I also find myself thinking that we've lost Christopher Lee and Louis Jourdan within six months. Has anyone checked how Frank Langella is feeling?
Oh, and Ornette Coleman also died today. What a day!

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Peter Jackson was telling Christopher Lee to scream more when Grima stabbed him in the back. Lee's response was, "Have you any idea what kind of noise happens when somebody's stabbed in the back? Because I do." He then went into a detailed description of a clandestine part of WWII that apparently involved killing Nazis.
" I was attached to the SAS from time to time but we are forbidden -- former, present, or future -- to discuss any specific operations. Let's just say I was in Special Forces and leave it at that. People can read into that what they like."
What a badass.
R.I.P. to Ornette Coleman too. I'll have to spin Free Jazz and The Shape of Jazz to Come soon.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Upon consideration, I am now thinking the Dracula thing may be a red herring. After all, we lost Tanith Lee more recently than Louis Jourdan. Maybe it's going to be a trio of Lees.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
The little shithole of a town in which I grew up was ghastly in many respects -- it's most "charming" feature was proximity to Youngstown, OH -- but our rinky dink movie theater showed every last goddamn one of those Hammer Films Dracula movies from the late 60s, early 70s. I was a Christopher Lee fan from then on.
He also hosted a Saturday Night Live sometime in the late 70s that remains one of my all-time top 5 SNLs. (I still lol a little when that Baba Wawa/My Fair Lady sketch comes to mind.)
Happy trails, Sir Christopher.
