I'm just going to inject a little blithe racism into this Ferguson discussion that seems to have wandered into this thrad.

I was in Santa Barbara at Ye Olde Spanish Heritage Fiesta, America's longest-running festival as far as I know, and this woman says that the festival has been "taken over by Mexicans". Don't get her wrong, though! She doesn't blame them, it's just the commercial interests adjusting to the changing demographics. Is that a new dog whistle? It sounds like a dog whistle.

The best part, IMO, is that the woman said she was from "back east", which means two things to me. One, that the people of Spanish heritage have been in Santa Barbara a buttload of generations longer than her pasty ass, and two, that she was probably comparing it to the festivals of her childhood in one of the thirteen original colonies. I imagine she assumes all of what comprises the USA today shares the same exact history that she learned in US history.

There's the belief that whites as a majority and are being pushed out by Mexicans having litters of children (if you're Mexican it's a litter, if your a Duggard it's precious individual faith warriors). The fact that Mexicans having large families is in part related to being converted by white Catholics who oppose birth control, abortions and women's rights is totally lost on them, but a nice irony.

It's in Santa Barbara for fuck's sake. I mean I know people from back east don't take California history in school, or make little model missions out of either sugar cubes or paper mache, or memorize all the stops on Father Serra's 600-mile conquest mission of salvation up El Camino Real that became the backbone of this state, but if you moved to Santa Barbara wouldn't you at least visit the biggest tourist attraction in town? You can take a tour and learn all about how they took the children from their parents and separated the boys from the girls and dressed everyone up like catholic schoolchildren, and taught them to speak and read and write Spanish, and taught them that they were full of sin, and beat them until they "assimilated".

or consider those are the tactics of that particular police force when in these situations.

it doesn't help anything to spread racism where there is none. in this case the racism is in your own approach to the happening.

an article from Michael Moore's site was shared on my fb. he did what you did. he took a story about a black producer being detained by police for matching the description of robbery suspect who was in the area. Michael Moore said it was a case of being pulled over for being black. in fact it was, but that was because the suspect was a tall black man and the producer not only fit the description, but was seen running. the only shitty thing the police did was detain him for six hours before looking at the tape and seeing he wasn't the black robber in the video, but police are shitty to everybody in that regard. anyhow, MM tried to make it out to be a case of racism and is therefore a racist. he makes a lot of money from that and from poor people in general. without them he'd be nothing.

i think if he and Ann Coulter got married it would unite the world.

I might buy your apologism a bit more if the cops detained every white guy they saw for 6 hours after a reported robbery involving a white guy, or if say the LAPD was just involved in shooting an unarmed white guy.

i was with some friends (all white) on our way to party in Niagara Falls. halfway there we decided to stop for smokes and pulled into a store. i got out and hobbled up to the door (i was in crutches with a broken ankle), noticed the store was closed (it looked open as all the lights were on), turned around and saw a swarm of police cars surround my friend's car. they got out and ordered my two friends out of the vehicle and began to frisk them. one cop approached me and patted me down after taking my crutches away. they had us sit around the car and just talked to each other for a while. after a while they came up to us and told us to turn around and go back to our hometown. we told them we were on our way to a party and they said that was too bad, we had to turn around and go home. we were all legal drinking age. so we turned around and headed home and a cop car followed us all the way until we were in our own region. we had done nothing.

i'm just saying don't spread racism where it calls on you to imply it.

Apropos of which, here's the story of Chris Lollie, who was tasered and arrested for being black in a whites-only area refusing to comply with requests from a private security guard ("go away from here") and a police officer ("stay where you are").

The St. Paul Minnesota Police Department released a statement in support of their officers' actions: "Our officers were called by private security guards on a man who was trespassing in a private area. The guards reported that the man had on repeated occasions refused to leave a private “employees only” area in the First National Bank Building. [...] the officers believed he might either run or fight with them. It was then that officers took steps to take him into custody."

This is the "private employees only" area Lollie was reported as a trespassing in.



Fortunately for us, Lollie was able to record his own arrest on his mobile -

Black man taken to jail for sitting in public...

Wouldn't it be great if all those white-privilege-denying dudes were asked to comment publicly on Chris Lollie's tasering?

no i was detained for about half an hour and then made to leave an entire region where i had done nothing wrong, escorted the whole way by a marked police car.

I do find the dichotomy interesting, isn't it possible the cops are both racist and dicks? Why does it have to be one or the other?

Also, you are a Canadian, correct? Did this take place in Canada or the U.S.? If it was in the U.S. then, being Canadian, you were a foreigner. Being of the wrong nationality is nearly as bad as being of the wrong race.

If the event took place in Canada, then your story is pointless. No one of any importance cares what happens in Canada.
