last week I took a bent 280 foot boom off a wrecked crane truck, with 2 excavators and a giant forklift. then separated the swivel assembly from the truck and crammed everything into two sea cans to be shipped off to Vietnam.

probably for scrap metal, but I wouldn't be surprised if the truck winds up as a Jerry rigged missile launcher or something.

It's a cruel turn of fate. In the wake of the great Stealing Secret Santa that the Kiwis foisted upon mr drusus, she realized that celebrating early actually feels good. I made an absolutely dreadful Thanksgiving dinner for myself on Thanksgiving day, then spent a couple more days choking down the leftovers. Seriously, it just wasn't good. An extremely over-salty, pre-cooked roasted turkey breast, mashed potatoes made lazily, stuffing and gravy from packages and jellied cranberry from a can. Blergh. But then last night a coworker invited me to a Thanksgiving dinner being thrown by a couple friends of his and they went ALL OUT. Seriously one of the best dinners I've ever had.

I managed to sprain my pinky on Thanksgiving by being my normal klutz. I was reaching for my carry-on that I had stupidly put on the hook of the airport bathroom door. Before I could get a grip it slipped off and landed sideways on my pinkie. It is getting better, but using a real keyboard at work is making it hurt again.

This is going to a banner xmas year at my house. For only the second time since taking possession of the property last century, I'm going to put up a tree.

I'm not sure what made me want to put one up. Some conversation I had with the relations over Thanksgiving, I suspect. But now UPS tells me it's on my front porch so I'll have that to deal with when I get home.

And yet, I'm already griping about having to take it down after the holidays. My humbug cred remains intact!

Our truck is borked and I wanted a real tree (for the first time since childhood)...so we tied the fucker to the top of the little old Benz sedan and got laughed at...a lot. But I thought it was hella cool that we didn't let whatever stop us, and I like how my family rolls.

Secondly, we went to a fancy restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner where I had the best turkey I've ever had. And then they gave us a tray with five desserts for free!

My baby brother is shipping out to the Navy tonight. I've spent fewer than 48 aggregate hours with him and our sister over the last 15 years, thanks to the neglect of our shared deadbeat biological father, but in those few visits I always felt an easy closeness with my young siblings that I don't experience with most people. Maybe that's all in my head, but this is family to me so I'll take it. Anyway I'm excited for him and proud and anxious and extremely curious of what the future will bring. I have known and worked with a shitload of Navy pukes in my lifetime, and every career is different.

I am staying at the fancy pants hotel across the street from work for free because of forecast inclement weather. It's not that I think I would have any trouble getting to and from work, having lived in snow country for 20+ years, I would not, it's that I don't get the extra four hours per day pay if I don't stay in the hotel. That's right, the Department of Transportation requires my employer to pay me for all but 8 hours sleeping time in a day when I am requested by my employer to stay in a hotel. I normally work 12 hours, but during this event I will be getting 16 hours pay for it, plus a free hotel room and meals.

Going to another RiffTrax show tonight. Got Belcourt theater tickets this time. I hope this is a better experience than the Starship Troopers show.

Featured: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. MST3K did this show back in the day and the other spinoff group, Cinematic Titanic, did it a couple of years ago. Both of those versions were great; I expect great things from this treatment, too.

Not with me, but one of my best friends' girlfriend has terminal cancer. They have been living together for at least 20 years and have two daughters of 14 and 17, I've come to know all of them pretty well. I have never had anyone this close to me dying, except my parents. What's even weirder is that I bumped into another friend last week and she told me she had a melanoma removed and her brother is dying of cancer that was originally a melanoma too, so she was pretty worried for a couple of days. And then when we were going to celebrate that she got the all clear, my other friend called to tell me about his girlfriend. It was a very rollercoaster week.

I found out yesterday that due to my son's extreme prematurity he would have qualified for SSI benefits, which we could have used for more occupational therapy and to pay for what we did get, which I had to stop because we couldn't afford it any more. We're currently still $5,000 in debt STILL because of that shit.

No one bothered to mention it to me anywhere.
Another reason why we need universal health care.
