Re: Return to Gender 101
I'm not sure why everyone on the internet keeps bringing up the free speech thing. The first amendment states
Quote:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
|
Show me where the government interfered or is interfering with this guy's free speech, reddit's free speech, the sub-redditards free speech, etc.
I'd put the chances at close to 100% that he was fired for logging into one of the sub reddits to do some mod work using a company computer and company time.
If anything, people should be up in arms about the right of people to peaceably assemble as that appears to be the most tread on part of the first amendment by federal, state, and local governments.

Re: Return to Gender 101
Sarah Silverman has been making political ads lately as part of her " Let My People Vote" campaign. Not everyone is pleased, apparently.
Rabbi Yaakov Rosenblatt wrote an open letter to her, saying that he thought she had "latched on to politics because you are searching for something to build." He went on to suggest that she focus her energies on more positive pursuits, such as marriage and child-raising: "I pray that you pursue marriage and, if you are so blessed, raise children."
[As an aside, I suspect that if Ms Silverman wanted to be married and/or to have children, she'd have plenty of volunteers.]
Anyway, Sarah's dad was pissed. As he succinctly put it: "You don't fuck with my family."
So far as I know, Sarah hasn't responded, but from what I know of her, I would imagine that any response she chooses to make will be a memorable one.

Re: Return to Gender 101
Misogyny vs Sexism
An Australian dictionary has redefined misogyny in a way that shades into the definition of sexism and the Guardian had a panel weigh in on it. I like some of their definitions of the difference. They are very clear.
And back on the creep shots topic. Since I've been reading up on the Jimmy Savile scandal a bit, I find the way Brutsch ingratiated himself with Reddit and got them to rely on him for jobs they didn't want to do uncomfortably similar to the way Savile ingratiated himself with charities and hospitals to get access to vulnerable patients. I definitely think there's a similar MO and mindset at work here.

Re: Return to Gender 101
For whatever reason, I had a whole of thrads on ignore, including my own "Gallery of Awesome" and "Moviewatch" (which explains why I could never find them). This thrad was also one of these ignored ones.
And now having caught up, I have only one question. How do I raise my girls to be more like the women posting in this thrad?

Re: Return to Gender 101
I would surmise that an important factor is to drill into them from a very young age to never take anyone seriously who tries to tell them that they can't (or shouldn't) do something because they're girls, or that their sex in any way makes them less-capable or less-valuable.
Perhaps even better: emphasize the importance of critical-thinking skills. It's a lot harder to get someone to buy into bullcrap when they keep asking, "Where's the evidence?".

My wife and I do a good cop/bad cop routine where I joke about stereotypical stuff like "Girls aren't good at math" with my wife and she shoots it down. Even though she's not good at math. An vise-versa with guy related stuff like cooking. Then we hammer home the after school special with a lesson in why that's wrong.
They barely know what hit them and we're all joking around. That way they hear the stereotypes, hear why they suck, learn to ignore them, and can take a joke/give it back.
We let them hear stuff on the news like that Akin bunghole and talk about how there are some people that would actively like to shut girls/women down if given the chance (especially older dudes who are dying off and struggling to hold on to power); the 14 year old girl in Pakistan; shitty men who treat women bad; the importance of having an education and means to support yourself.

For what it's worth, I think of you as one of the great all-time dads, and I'm serious.
You are patient and fun, and you are crazy proud of them, always showing off about how cool and smart and funny they are. And girls whose dads love and respect them the way you do are much more immune to bullshit when they do encounter it. When someone tries to demean them or push them around, they'll know better and they'll be able to just lol at how stupid that is.

Re: Return to Gender 101
See, a campaign to slutshame a woman in order to punish her for pointing out gender-based wage income inequities is surely nowhere near as awful as doxing a virulent and hyper-prolific racist, sexist scumbag who specializes in facilitating pedophilia.
Also: if questioner had been all "Go Sisters" in her online presence, she'd have been a radical feminist. But because she tweeted the no-women-sports-tweets thing, she's something something war on women, I dunno, hypocrite maybe? but anyhow HA! bad.

I echo the others. You are a good parent already, because you even thought to ask this question.
But, as you knew I would, I have an answer anyway. Help them discover for themselves that they are capable and able people, by helping them find opportunities to get their own accomplishments under their belts their own way. Help them learn from mistakes. Help them learn their own limits and strengths.
It's harder to make someone feel worthless or crazy or unsure of themselves when they know pretty well who they are and what they can do.

If I Could Go Back In Time, I Wouldn't Report My Rape | xoJane
Quote:
We headed upstairs to the ADA’s office, and I sat down next to my advocate, glancing at her for reassurance. She gave me the look that I needed. The ADA walked in with perfectly orange makeup and hair waxed back with precision. He opened his mouth and said, “There’s a 99% chance we’ll lose this case. I just won’t be able to win this one for you. They’re going to use the slut defense and it’s going to work.”
Slut defense? Is this official legal terminology now?
I froze. If this had been the Internet, I would have replied with a “LOL WAT.” When I finally regained my ability to speak, all I could say was, “Why?” What he said next read straight from a Feminism 101 text on how victims of sexual assault are treated by society. I’d heard it all before; I should have expected it.
Why had I thought I’d be immune to being called a slut, whore, homewrecker, protected from having my motives and intentions questioned, from being treated as if I were the criminal? And by my own attorney, no less. Whose side was he on here? I certainly was not immune, and orange-faced-waxy-hair proved that to me. Suddenly, I needed the tissues that were, thankfully, all over the place. I guess my tears made him uncomfortable, because he walked out without a word.
...
Her story eventually took a turn away from mine. I saw where things were going. Suddenly, I didn’t know if I was on her side anymore. And it happened. She said what I had been fearing: “And now he’s spending 10 years in prison.”
I started crying and had to leave the room. Was I actually jealous? Was I angry that she got the closure I didn’t?
Later that night, as I was on the 6 train home, I had (what seems like an obvious) realization. She and I were the same; a victory for my sister was a victory for me. There is no winner or loser when it comes to rape. One person will always be the rapist and perpetrator, and the other will always be the survivor. We survived a heinous crime that uses a sexual act as a tool of power, control, violence and hatred. Nothing will ever change that. A rapist in prison for 10 years is a success for every survivor, with every kind of story. And a rapist who has gone free is not a failure for us, merely evidence of a flawed system. We are all one.
What it took until my Union Square stop for me to remember is that the facilitator at the training session had to prompt her to disclose what happened after making her report. She seemed unconvinced, uneasy. A 10-year sentence will never change what happened, and indeed, is unlikely to change the course of a path to healing. She had known every pain I had. She probably feels about the 20 months she spent in and out of court the same way I do about settling outside of court.
Rape culture pits us against our own sisters and brothers, has us compare ourselves to those who share our stories; we disbelieve each other, resent each other, when all we should be doing is sustaining one another. A rapist will be a rapist for the rest of their lives, regardless of prison time. Nothing can take away that title.
|
Strongly recommend reading the whole thing.
