Thankfully no one was hurt but this absolutely incenses me. It is bad enough that my rep is such a minority of sanity in my state. She is accustomed to systematic attempts to remove her from office. Legal eagles might recognize her name as being among the Plaintiffs in the Texas Reapportionment case. But to threaten her health and safety is just fucking reprehensible. They haven't caught the guy, and no credit is being taken for the attack, but I guaran-fucking-tee you that this is about her recent appearance supporting the protests over defunding Planned Parenthood.
She has stood in the face of the Republican legislature battling on immigration, education, and issues that effect poverty. The only response to that was for our Governor to refer to her as a "show horse." She aligns with my values, but beyond that she is from my home town. She attended the same community college I did before being a transfer student like me. She had to fight poverty to get an education, a career, and to raise her family.
I feel like an attack on her is an attack on me. She is not just my representative. She is my voice and I am part of her support. She embodies my values and where I come from. For some coward to throw firebombs at her staffers because of those values is an attack on me.
Re: New And Improved Rant Thread, now with 50% more profanity!
Today I accidentally clicked on the Two Minutes Love thread thinking that it was the Two Minutes Hate thread. I was greeted by a series of posts (ending with a picture of a dog kissing booth) that are likely to render me irredeemably cheerful for the remainder of the day. Thanks alot, assholes!

SO not only did Mr Curses short out the hedge trimmer he also just broke the lawn mower. Oh, and our gutters have rusted through and the fence in the back needs to be replaced.

I can't believe I'm arguing with a damn ethicist about white male privilege. Shit. Seems strange to me that an ethicist doesn't even recognize that the inherent bias of his white male privilege undermines his own ethical point of view. Damn.
and darn. How can some people recognize their privilege, and some can't? I honestly don't know.

Being a traitor to one's own gender probably helps.
For less extreme cases, perhaps experiencing a situation where one lacks privilege and coming out of it without developing a victim mentality could lead to an easier acceptance.
On the negative side, the knowledge that accepting the existence of privilege requires accepting that one benefits from injustice probably leads to a lot of closed minds. People tend to accept new ideas that don't conflict with existing beliefs and most people don't tend to believe that they are bad. Those of who do, well...

Re: New And Improved Rant Thread, now with 50% more profanity!
So a persistently assholish patron has been being predictably assholish to me lately. On Saturday I passed him in the aisle between the bookshelves and, as I am a large woman and a Klutz, pulled in and pulled the stuff I was carrying closer so as not to accidentally whack him with it. He decided to interpret this polite gesture as my being rude and went on about then and at length again when he saw me at the desk on Tuesday night. I refused to engage with him but it ruined the night for me.
Oh, did I mention he's a passive-aggressive fuck who mutters "I have to ask. I won't know unless I ask." every time he bugs you at the desk? Yeah, that too.
So while driving home Tuesday night I decided I couldn't let patrons get to me like that anymore. I declared my intention not to let him bother me to my coworkers the next morning. Not an hour ago the fucker accused me of being a member of the klan for not celebrating Easter. WTF? I was kicking myself mentally the minute I said, "I don't celebrate Easter," because it's more personal information than I like to tell the patrons and the asshole wouldn't let it go. He even got loud and angry at one point, before finally leaving after muttering that parting shot. What a fucking asshole!

If I were in your shoes, I would practice saying, "Oh, my. That was inappropriate!" in a sort of amused tone or something; and then I would probably never be able to do it in person. He sounds kind of scary.

Sigh. I like the moms I have fallen in with fine.* They are nice people. But I am exposed to significant proportions of WOO right off the WOOWOO train because of it. Am I destined to be an oddball/dissenter in every single group I am part of?
*We met at the library, and I was the only other one there who had my baby in a sling/carrier. Most of them know each other because they had homebirths. They are very crunchy, which I am fairly crunchy myself, but.....

I'm wishing I could get away with saying, "I don't hate Black people, I just hate you." But that would probably get me fired. Besides, the angry tone was after I said it was a religious holiday and I was not part of that religion and before I said I wasn't willing to tell him anymore. That's what prompted the, "You're probably a Mormon, or a Catholic, or in the Klan."
One of my coworkers says that being a Mormon, Catholic Klanswoman is a rare talent and she's very impressed. After that I kind of wish I'd said, "You're right, sir, I am a Mormon, Catholic in the Klan." I probably couldn't have gotten away with that either.

Yes, I am afraid so. I am what, twice your age, and I have yet to find a group of real life people that don't either bore me senseless, piss me off, or freak me out in some way at some point. I spend quite a bit of time thinking about how good it is that I like my husband and kid a whole lot because they are also my friends and my companions.
