Radiolarian stew, er strew.
I bought several prepared slides this week, and they arrived today. I'm so excited about this one: Radiolarian Strew. Basically, a bunch of radiolarians thrown together.
Prepared slides don't have any sense of discovery, but it's a great way to practice, and I can often get some nifty images. Also, I spent some time dusting lenses and cleaning, and I wanted to see the results of my efforts.
Radiolarians: make great subjects.
Dust: Meh. I got some of the worst offenders, but still have a lot of dust in my light path.

Were these colorized (or stained) for easy photography? Or is gold, purple and green the natural color?

Re: Radiolarian stew, er strew.
The color is almost entirely a result of diffusion or diffraction - one of those "d" words. These are otherwise transparent structures.

More radiolarians:
A focus stacked image for the last one.... I'm not entirely satisfied with this and will likely try, try again.

I really don't want to have to buy a new program, but it looks like Helicon Focus did a much better job. Same source images.

Burning ring of fire.
I have the new setup I wanted, now I have new challenges to cope with...
Isn't is lovely? Well, except for the ring of light, which I think is cause by internal reflection in the photo tube.

Re: Radiolarian stew, er strew.
Yet another focus stack. I spent some time trying to tweak this one, as this version is really beautiful but it's hiding some detail.
I haven't fixed my "ring of light" problem either.

Just for the really curious, some other photos of the exact same thing.
Approx. 100x
Approx. 200x
The "also ran" focus stack.

Re: Radiolarian stew, er strew.
Can't give up on the Radiolarians. These were also a test because I improved my fix to the "ring of light" problem... My original uneven cutting caused one corner of the picture to be too dark, especially on lower magnifications. I did a slightly better job of cutting a round hole in a small piece of paper.
Some darkfield pictures, because they amuse me:
And a focus stack.... I have a set of pictures top-to-bottom of this one, but it gets really busy in the middle there.... This is top-to-middle, or so.

Yet another one, actually more of the same. I've been wanting to retake these pictures since I fixed my lighting problems.

Re: Radiolarian stew, er strew.
I have a paid license for one image stacking program (Zerene), and my demonstration license ran out on the other, so now I get a watermark:
Been trying to achieve the same results in the licensed software, and I'm just not getting the results I want. I must have wasted hours on this already.
