They want this athlete to prove she's a woman.

Semenya's masculine build fueled rumors, but the South Africa team manager said there should be no dispute.

"Even the ID that she has, the passport, says she is a female," Phiwe Mlangeni-Tsholetsane told CNN by phone from Berlin on Thursday. "There was no cheating on our part, or even on the part of the athlete."

She said Semenya was not bothered by the questions over her gender and was simply focusing on improving her times.

"If there are tests being done, we accept that. We can't stop that," Mlangeni-Tsholetsane said. "We have nothing to hide."

Results from the IAAF's planned tests are not expected to be known in the near future.

"The gender verification test is an extremely complex procedure," said IAAF spokesman Nick Davies -- who revealed the question of Semenya's gender was first raised after her astonishing African Junior Championships displays.

To be fair the xxxy controversy is for legitimate reasons, or at the very least it looks at questions beyond simply what sex really means. genetically she could actually be male, that does occur.

It would seem to me that the only way to decide it would be if she bore children. IMO up to that point it is just recreational equipment.

It may be for legitimate reasons, but it sure looks like the IAAF is questioning it merely because her boobs aren't big enough.

It seems to me like they are questioning it after she did better than expected, you know, for a women.

Whatever combination of x and y she has, it seems a bit sexist to question her gender because she did well. But then again I have issues with how gender is treated in the olympics.

Your mind works in mysterious ways. I was talking about determining her gender. I am assuming that if she were classified as a man she could still try to compete in the Olympics.

Is competition entirely about gender for you? Or are you looking for ways to compete with the women athletes? Maybe you would stand a better chance?

And a bit heteronormative to question her sex based on her appearance. There's a goodly range of outcomes possible even in those whose sex is indisputable. And for those whose sex is disputable, gender should be the deciding factor. (Or, really, even if their sex isn't disputable, but it's less debatable for the disputably sexed.)
