temperance movement go home you are drunk
1915 or so Temperance Movement.
I think I just forget sometimes how absolutely utterly fucking racist US history is. Seriously people? Mexicanized food? "Pepper sauces" as a kind of evil that leads inevitably to "a drunkard's grave"?
What. The. Fuck.

I like that tea and coffee are somehow less worse than soda.

Re: temperance movement go home you are drunk
Mysteries:
Do they mean "tea, coffee, and cocoa", or do they mean "tea, coffee, and coca [leaves]", as in "the thing you refine cocaine from"? Because both of those sets plausibly go together.
I love that "gingerale" is way down there, just shy of tobacco. Like, this is the substance I got when I had tummy problems as a little kid because it helps soothe the tummy. It is actually more gentle on the tummy than water.
Also extra prise for "RICH PASRIES". Dude just write the words with pencil first and check your spelling a bit, before inking.

All are "Self-indulgence" - Undisciplined behaviors.
My Grandmother kept such a list. And Grandpa was the example of why they should be avoided. Can you guess which one I preferred to hang around?

Re: temperance movement go home you are drunk
That's kind of a compliment calling mexican food flavorful.
I think but am not certain they mean coca as in the drink coca-cola and its copycats. The best translation today would probably be Energy Drinks.
Amusingly cocaine proper might go under Patent medicine and soothing syrups, which were essentially their unregulated supplement market. Many soothing syrups soothed by being alcohol extracts of plants like marijuana or opium.

But if you avoid between-meal snacks you never even get to the pepper sauces and Mexicanized foods. Problem solved!
Back in the day, I leapfrogged all the steps after snacking and went straight to "Liquor and Stong Drink." Avoided the drunkard's grave part, but it was touch and go for awhile.

I have avoided piecing between meals today by not having meals and just piecing.

I quit smoking, so I have to skip that step, but everything else looks good to me. Especially Mexicanized food.

Re: temperance movement go home you are drunk
I know this is mostly 'haha dumb temperance movement' but for anyone interested in the source, you can read/search the 1915 book this image is from here,
The temperance program, by Thos. F. Hubbard - Full View | HathiTrust Digital Library
I find the US Temperance movement fascinating as it's so heavily connected to women's suffrage. Women got the vote 5 years after this was released and while the movement promoted 'traditional' women, and had plenty of sexism, it was also used by women as a reason to educate and organize.
Like in this case, the woman is seen in her traditional role of mother to a young boy, but it is *her* home. This could have been titled "A Wives sloth destroys men's ambitions" or some other garbage with the man of the house standing behind her chiding.
Or this illustration from the same book where it appears the woman is, gasp, speaking to authority and when the authority agrees, the man is the one that kneels.

Also plenty of racism, with 'traditional' obviously meaning white, as well as straight, married, etc.

Re: temperance movement go home you are drunk
Indeed, which makes it all the more interesting how non traditional suffragettes used it as cover to advance their movement. It's not like the temperance movement created the suffragettes but the suffragettes that grabbed onto the movement "My husband beats me" was a taboo thing to say especially in public but "My Husband's a drunkard" much less so even though it was essentially code for the same.
Although I do feel sad for the true believers who thought that it really was the drink causing the sin of man and not the entire system along with shitty men.

Re: temperance movement go home you are drunk
Yeah. And the thing is, there were absolutely real problems with drunken men beating their wives, they just... made it worse rather than better on the whole.
