Recommend me an RPG
I am sick of Elder Scrolls games. It's gonna be awhile before I can pick them back up. I love RPGs and would like to find another one to play. I have Wii, PS2, Xbox 360, and a Mac. What's a good game to play, ? I love the longer games with levelling sort of like Morrowind or FFXII. A good storyline is a must.

Re: Recommend me an RPG
Have you played old SNES era RPGs? I have several of those I could recommend. Obvious ones like FFVI, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana obviously, but also lesser known ones like Dragon Quest V, FFV and Seiken Densetsu 3.
The Suikoden series is also a must. You get dozens of characters to level up (108 characters per game, actually, but not all can participate in standard RPG combat) and a thoroughly engrossing story.
Shadow Hearts was pretty cool.
Not as familiar with WRPGs unfortunately. When I get back into RPGs I'm probably going to play a few of the most frequently recommended ones.

Re: Recommend me an RPG
I hear that Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story are good on the Wii (they just came out this year). I've been thinking about getting them, but I wonder when I'll have time to play them.
I would also recommend Chrono Trigger (and its sequel, Chrono Cross), and the other SNES RPGs The Man mentioned. Final Fantasy 4 and 5 are also worth a play.
Vagrant Story on the PS1 is also really good.
I haven't really played that many RPGs in recent years though, aside from handheld ones. The Golden Sun series was good (the last one, on the DS, was definitely my favoriate of the three, or two if you count the first two as one big game), that was on the GBA and DS.

Go oldshool and try Nethack and Angband. No storyline, just serious masochism as the game is designed to kill you and you cannot save.

Re: Recommend me an RPG
Go to GOG.com and get the old Ultima games. Or the old Fallout.
They are still fun. Or Baldur's Gate.

They also have Might & Magic, though those lean more toward hack'n'slash than story.
All DRM-free, and most of the old ones already set up to run in dosbox and such. I love gog.

Re: Recommend me an RPG
So umm anyway.
Planescape: Torment (ok I'm not honestly sure if there is a mac version) is arguably the best RPG ever made. Pump up your intelligence and charisma your first time around, trust me here.
Since you have a 360, play all the Mass Effect games.
Aaron said the Suikoden series is a "must" but really I'd only say that about Suikoden II.
Throw every Final Fantasy # after 7 into an industrial shredder (ok ok except 9, that one was cool) then get Final Fantasy Tactics and wonder why, translation issues notwithstanding, they could never make anywhere near that awesome of a story again.
Almost everyone already said Fallout. Just don't get that horrible spinoff they made for the xbox. I'm serious, it's beyond awful.
If you want to troll the used game stores/websites and spend too much money, get the best PS2 RPGs: Dragon Quest VIII and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. These two will keep you occupied for 200+ hours between them.
Add Dragon Quest VII for another 100+ hours of amazing. You rebuild a whole damn world one piece at a time.
Psychonauts is also on Steam, it was real cheap during the summer sale but even now I think it's less than 10 bucks.
They remade Final Fantasy IV on the DS and it's pretty great, just throwing that out there for if you get one or want to do the emulation dance.
While it has a decent bit of space combat and exploration, Star Control II is still very much an RPG and very awesome. It will definitely require DOSbox, since it's like 20 years old. Or you can get The Ur-Quan Masters, a perfectly faithful re-port of the 3DO version of the game, which has slightly better graphics and added (kinda bad but in a funny way, and nowhere near as terrible as FFX) voice acting.
And if you haven't played Dragon Age: Origins yet, give that one a try if you can find it for relatively cheap. Just holy fuck stay away from that shitwreck of a sequel.

Re: Recommend me an RPG
Psh, I liked FF8 (it definitely has one of the best mini games... Triple Triad >>> Blitzball).
I didn't like FF10 or 12 that much though.
I kinda assumed she had played FF7-9, but maybe that was incorrect.
Also good is Super Mario RPG and the Mario & Luigi series, if you want something a little bit (ok, a lot bit) more light-hearted.
Kingdom Hearts are also good, although it's maybe too action/adventure oriented to be considered an RPG as opposed to an action game with heavy RPG elements.
I should also have seconded the recommendation of Seiken Densetsu 3 (the sequel to Secret of Mana). I think it's actually my favorite game in the Mana series.. Sword of Mana is just ok, while some of the other entries like Legend of Mana are a bit out there in some ways (it doesn't have a set story order, for example).
Xenogears on the PS1 was not bad. That same team did the XenoSaga games and then the XenoBlade Chronicles which was recently released on the Wii to acclaim.
I hear good things about Skies of Arcadia as well.

Re: Recommend me an RPG
Titan Quest and the sequel Immortal Throne still pull me back in. Good old-fashioned blood & sandal titan-fightin' epic.
As I begin to adjust to having a life again I have thought about trying out the Lilith mod -- it looks pretty interesting.

Re: Recommend me an RPG
Ah yes, the stripped down version of RoleMaster, wasn't it? From what I saw, the regular version had charts, charts and more charts. The critical hit tables were a fun read though.

Re: Recommend me an RPG
Yep. I spent a couple of years in a middle-earth campaign that had started with MERP (before I joined) and then expanded into rolemaster.
RM had a whole book of hit tables, a page for each weapon, with twenty different armour types in columns and ~100 rows of hit roll results. Seems pretty crazy, but could actually work quite smoothly in the hands of a competent GM. Whether the complexity added much more verisimilitude than a simpler system could have is questionable.
But I started with a simple homebrew system my brother made up. First published pen'n'paper was D&D Basic.
