Someday perhaps I will understand why sometimes I can leave my laptop connected to the company VPN, go to bed, wake up in the morning, and continue where I left off but, other times, I'll be fucking right in the middle of something and my VPN session will timeout "due to inactivity".

It's happened to me more often than I'd like to think about. Early in my career, if I took a day off sick, I didn't get paid for it. Eventually, I found employment that included sick pay. But then I never felt good about someone else having to work for me. I think if you can take a day off sick and nobody has to fill in for you or put in extra hours to get your work done, you're probably not needed much anyway.

Fuck a duck.
So I take the day off yesterday because it's the Li'l Puppet's birthday. We had her party last weekend, but the Actual Birthday must be respected. No problem, I can use a day off anyway.
First, she wants to go to the new community pool, with the big water slide. It's a big deal to her because she wants to "show" it to me. Fine. We get ready, drive down there, and it's fucking closed. Big tears. Finally get her calmed down and go to the little pool. She has an okay time, so whatevs.
Then she wants to go to Bounce U., which is one of those bouncy-house/big inflatable slide places. But unfortunately, the nearest one is closing early. But she really, really wants to go, so I wait for Mrs. Puppet to get home and we drive all the way to west Houston to go to the other one.
I was used to the nearer one, which always has staff patroling around and making sure the kids don't maim each other. At this place, there's ONE guy wandering around, and not even staying in the room the whole time. No problem, we police the fucking place ourselves.
Cut to the last trip down the big slide. My kid comes down, and starts to make her way off of it. Another stupid brat doesn't wait, and slides down right on top of her. Looks like her arm might be broken or sprained, so we spend the rest of the night in the ER. X-ray says nothing's broken (by the end of the long wait we figured that out ourselves, since her pain and minor swelling gradually diminish), so after $125 co-pay and a ruined evening, this wonderful birthday celebration is over.
My wife wants to charge those fuckers for our expenses. I'm pretty sure they'll just take the stance of "You signed a release, SUCKERS," but she's the lawyer.
