Someone on another forum said as of that election there is now not a single council in Britain without an LGBTQ member. And I think he said over half the SNP MPs are LGBTQ. You go Britain!

Thanks for the cheerleading, Janet, but the celebrations may have to wait—I can't find any news reports that support either of those claims and the second one is particularly difficult for this Brit to believe.

Re: News Miscellany
Now this is something we can cheer about : Britain gets no power from coal for 'first time on record'
Yes, you read that right! During the first 4 hours of yesterday, none of the UK's remaining coal-fired power stations were generating, which means that no coal was being used to power British homes and businesses for the first time since electricity became a thing in 1882.
That's the kind of small step out of which giant leaps for mankind are made.

Meanwhile, Germany had so much renewable energy on Sunday that it had to pay people to use electricity — Quartz
Lots of sun and lots of wind over the weekend = good for renewables.
The coal thing in the UK is a bit different.

OK, that bugged me enough that I looked it up, and it was apparently a protest against legislation that would require strippers working in clubs that serve alcohol be 21 or over.
So it was a biting satire of legislation that would have taken away his fundamental right to get drunk in the company of naked teenaged girls.

It is just too bad that the amendment was withdrawn. Laws to help combat the scourge of old, fat strippers are long overdue. That strippers like that are tolerated at all is a stain on the honor of our once great nation!
p.s. We need to do something about those old, fat airline stewardess too.

I guess this fits here too:

Also here:
Quote:
In recent weeks, Sanders officials have said they see the DNC platform drafting committee as the best place to push Clinton to the left ahead of the general election. And on Monday, they announced that two of Sanders’ five committee representatives would be among the left’s most vociferous Israel critics: Arab American Institute President Jim Zogby and Princeton professor and famed civil rights intellectual Cornel West.

Re: News Miscellany
The short of it is because the term encompass so many different cultures, it's seen today as the equivalent of saying 'not white' or 'you asians all look alike' and gained a negative connotation during/after the Vietnam and Korean wars when oriental was used to separate eastern races from western in a negative and xenophobic way.
In more modern days it has a connection to exoticism, where someone being 'Oriental' is prized for their exotic, taboo, other-worldly or animalistic/'un-civilized' nature.

Re: News Miscellany
So, why isn't "asian" equally offensive? Or is it?

Re: News Miscellany
It's a bit more defined. 'Oriental' can refer to anyone from Egypt, to Iran, to India, to China, to Japan, to the Philippines, etc. Asian has less historical connotation, not being used nearly as much as a derogatory, or in a colonial 'exotic' sense. It's still not as good as just 'country of origin' but isn't as bad as Oriental.
It's a bit like 'negro' in that negro is still technically valid but has enough baggage that it's not preferred.
