I think Matlock uses the term “Galtian Ubermensch”, which I have taken into my own personal use.

I would love to take back the word ubermensch. I want to apply it to really super nice people. The ones who do go out of their way to help and be kind to others for no other reason that it might physically hurt them to not be nice.

Agreed. So, we should start a movement, or what?

Russia’s Luna-25 space craft crashes into the moon | Russia | The Guardian
It's a shame, even though I was rooting for India anyway (also attempting a moon landing).
This being Russian drive-by science I hope we at least get some good dashcam footage from the crash.

Re: Drive by science
It's quite odd that nobody has landed a craft on the moon, with a live video rover. It would awesome to land near one of the historic landing sites and explore it. Maybe have the bots grab some trash left behind, and return it to earth.
Sell it on eBay.
You fuckin well know that alone would fund the mission.

Re: Drive by science
By "trash" I mean everything besides any functioning scientific equipment left by the moon landings.
Which means everything and anything is up for grabs.

Re: Drive by science
They want to study parts of the moon that are new to us, like the pole that the Russians were targeting. They don't want to explore the most well known spots on the moon.

Re: Drive by science
The Pistachio Nebula
https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap230822.html
Not only is this a cool image, it's also a new discovery this year! It's about the apparent size of the moon, but extremely faint, taking a very long exposure. "Amateurs with even small telescopes can create long exposures over sky areas much larger than most professional telescopes can see."
Which got me to thinking - how many observations of patches of sky about the size of a full moon would you have to make to cover the entire sky? A quick calculation - OK I looked it up - suggests that the moon covers 1/210,100 of the sky. At 70 hours each, one telescope could do this in around 1,678 years. (The images cover a larger area and there are lots of telescopes, but still, there's probably a lot of undiscovered sky.)

Re: Drive by science
India lands spacecraft near south pole of moon in historic first | The moon | The Guardian
Quote:
Chandrayaan-3 – “moon craft” in Sanskrit – took off from a launchpad in Sriharikota in southern India on 14 July, taking much longer to reach the moon than the Apollo missions in the 1960s and 70s, which arrived in a matter of days.
India is using rockets much less powerful than the US did back then. Instead, the probe orbited Earth several times to gain speed before embarking on its month-long lunar trajectory.
If all goes to plan, a rover called Pragyaan, the Sanskrit word for wisdom, will roll out of the belly of the lander on a ramp then roam around the moon’s surface for two weeks. It has been designed to take pictures, conduct experiments on the geology and the origins of the Earth, and investigate the presence of water ice.

Britain has boosted its aid to India by 70% this year, to £57 million. But we can't afford our own space program.

Re: Drive by science
A couple decades ago a 2000 year old grave was found on Sicily with a mirror and a sword which are grave goods associated with women wand men respectively.
Scientists couldnt get enough dna to determine sex, but technology has progressed.
Quote:
Dr Glendon Parker, an adjunct associate professor in the department of environmental toxicology at UC Davis, said: “Tooth enamel is the hardest and most durable substance in the human body. It contains a protein with links to either the X or Y chromosome, which means it can be used to determine sex. This is useful because this protein survives well compared to DNA.
“Our analysis involved extracting traces of proteins from tiny pieces of the surviving tooth enamel. This allowed us to calculate a 96% probability that the individual was female.”
The main form of warfare 2,000 years ago is likely to have been raids – surprise attacks – on enemy settlements. The mirror and weapons found in the grave are all associated with warfare.
It is thought that mirrors may have be used in the iron age for signalling, communicating and coordinating attacks. They also had ritualistic functions, as a tool to communicate with the supernatural world to ensure the success of a raid or “cleanse” warriors on their return.
