Re: Countdown from one million thread
* Smilin is also considering a job in Alaska.
Should I? Yes or no? What do my fellow count-downers think?
The job is out of Anchorage. The job description reads as follows....
Job Requirements: 0-7 years of experience in environmental investigation, remediation and construction. Construction management experience, multi-tasked/project experience, and strong technical writing, interpersonal, and client relations skills. U.S. Corps of Engineers, Air Force, or oil and gas industry experienced preferred. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, self-starter who is able to work with minimal supervision.
Job Responsibilities: Responsibilities include participating in soil and ground water sampling programs, construction or other field quality control, developing and writing subcontractor statements of work, work plans, and reports, preparing cost estimates, performing technical tasks and assisting with the execution of field programs under the supervision of a project manager. The successful candidate will work with a team of technical staff from multiple disciplines, interact with project managers and subcontractors as well as project controls, administrative and safety and health staff; multi-tasking for general project support. Must be willing to travel to remote locations across Alaska for fieldwork.
I'm currently working for the Air Force and have worked previously for TVA for 10 years. I'm more than qualified but I'm interested in the living conditions in Alaska around Anchorage.
Any input?
Thanks so much P-dub...you people are the bestest!!!!!

Re: Countdown from one million thread
It's beautiful country, but it is expensive and they grow mosquitoes real big! If you think Washington is too rainy, you may not like the cloud cover most of the year.
However, it sounds like an adventure!

Re: Countdown from one million thread
985,046 What do you want to know about the living conditions? Anchorage is a pretty big town, around 250,000 when I was there 15 years ago. In the Winter, there is a lot of snow (around 100 inches), the average temperature is around 20 degrees F, and there is about 5 hours of daylight. There is a lot of shopping, parks, skiing, fishing, snow mobiling, flying, camping, hiking, kayaking...

How much more expensive?
What are the schools like?
What kind of recreation is there?
Would I be able to take my car and drive up there?

Again, my information is 15 years old, but cost-of-living was comparable to California. But there was no income tax, no sales tax, and you got the Permanent Fund Dividend every year.

Alaskans put a very high value on education, much more than your used to in TN.

per minus' suggestion, you may want to visit in the Winter. Everyone loves the place in the Summer, but that's only three months long.

Won't be able to wait until Winter. If I'm gonna go, I'm gonna have to go now.
How much sunlight do they have in the wintertime?
What does "moose" taste like?

Re: Countdown from one million thread

Well, Winter will be setting in pretty soon, it could happen as soon as the first couple of weeks of September. The termination dust will start moving down the Chugach mountains in a few weeks. January and February are definately the hardest months, and I don't care how much you think you like snow, it really starts to wear thin on a person about this time.
Anchorage gets roughly 4 or 5 hours of daylight in the Winter. But the sun doesn't get very far above the horizon, so it's like an extended evening. Plus, all the snow keeps things pretty bright.
Moose tastes like chicken... just kidding... I would say it's comparable to venison. Plus there is elk, caribou, bear (not very good IMO), fish, fish, fish, and more fish.
