This morning local civic leaders in several places are wondering aloud if some of the protesters are really provocateurs who have no interest in justice for Floyd.

The possibility entered my mind on the night when the cop precinct was torched. I was heartened to see a multiracial intergenerational participation in general, but the most enthusiastically destructive ones seemed to include a lot of whites.

We need antifa now more than ever because I think the threat from white nationalist fascists is higher than it has been in the recent past. We might be seeing false flag operations. What we do know is that there are alot of white people starting the violence which seems odd.


I also have no reason to think that antifa is causing most of the violence, do you have a source on that?

It's hard to know who is causing violence, lacking any substantial information, but for sure if, if, they are taking an active role they need to stop. A lot of whites are among the most enthusiastic about attacking cops and looting stores. I find that patronizing, another form of cultural appropriation. They don't have standing. They are not black. Since affiliation can't be reasonably determined between the groups, I'd be just as happy to have the cops make the collars of troublemakers and then there's at least the possibility to make a determination of motive.

I do strongly, enthusiastically, joyfully support a show of solidarity, interspersing with POC, following their lead, passively creating a barrier between the LEO's and the POC if appropriate, but probably best to stop short of engaging in destructive behavior. Let POC own their own righteous rage.

I'm lumping all those who want to get physical together because there isn't a practical way to distinguish between them. Finger pointing and CT's are flying everywhere, it just adds to the confusion and makes things worse.

Also, all the politicians making flowery public displays of concern and empathy need to start talking policy initiatives instead of empty speechifying.

In this speech, Dr. King pretty much says it all. He reminds us that if we are to condemn rioting for the destructive, unbridled, and opportunistic aggression that it is, or, more importantly, to try to prevent it from happening in the first place, we have to first understand its cause. Rioting can be thought of as a symptom of a disease. In order to treat the symptom, we have to treat the disease. And the disease—the root cause—in this case is systemic racism that persists more than 50 years after Dr. King's speech and his later assassination.
