One thing I found interesting when playing games online is just how much their profitability depends on allowing people to flaunt their wealth over others while hiding the truth.
A western adult parading around a high school in rural India trying to make all the kids envious of their wealth would look sad and pathetic, but wrap all those kids in similar skins and the same adult will happily dump thousands to flaunt it to other apparent equals.
Elon seems like the biggest whale in existence. He is so desperate to be liked he's dropped his standards below zero, Andrew Tate is just insecure desperation incarnate who seems to spend his time courting the praise of teenage boys, while also being able to imagine those praising him aren't as sad as they really are.
I don't think it will be long until Xtwitter is mostly nazi-pedo-dudes and their defenders.
I try not to be judgmental of people who remain on Twitter because a lot of them make a living through content creation and/or social media, and (for now) it remains an important medium for outreach and audience interaction, but I genuinely can't look at it for five minutes before logging out in disgust. I read something yesterday that suggested that their ad revenue was down 40% yoy, which is great, but that still means something like $2.5 billion (with a 'b') in revenue for the year, which is hard for me to process.
The people I know who've done careful looking report that it is not in fact still an important medium for outreach and audience interaction. Unless you're paying for it, your posts just won't show up in practice, probably even to your followers.
The number I saw claiming they were down 40% was giving concrete numbers which were clearly at least significantly too small; if you scaled them back up you'd get to around 1.5B/year, when they were making nearly all of their 5B/year revenue from ads pre-Elon.
Can't help but wonder if these people may have a smaller advertising budget than, I dunno, Disney.
