Re: More blithe racism
I kind of love that his defense boils down to, I'm not a racist, I'm classist so that's perfectly OK.

Re: More blithe racism
Study Finds White Americans Believe They Experience More Racism Than African Americans : Political Blind Spot
Quote:
There’s a saying that “the new racism is to deny that racism exists.” If that is the case, it may explain a study conducted by researchers from Tufts University’s School of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School. Their findings claim that self-described white Americans believe they have “replaced blacks” as the primary victims of racial discrimination in contemporary America.
The authors say that their study highlights how the expectations of a “post-racial” society, predicted or imagined in the wake of Barack Obama’s presidency, has far from been achieved.
The study finds that while both Caucasian and African Americans agree that anti-black racism has decreased over the last 60 years, whites believe that anti-white racism has increased. Moreover, the study finds that the majority of Caucasians believe that anti-white racism is a “bigger problem” than what African Americans face.
Tufts Associate Professor of Psychology Samuel Sommers, PhD is the co-author of the article “Whites See Racism as a Zero-sum Game that They Are Now Losing,” from the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science. He comments that “It’s a pretty surprising finding when you think of the wide range of disparities that still exist in society, most of which show black Americans with worse outcomes than whites in areas such as income, home ownership, health and employment.”
|
Basically, the majority of white people are terrible.

Re: More blithe racism
A local Fox News anchor made a racist slur while recapping Lady Gaga’s Oscars performance - Salon.com
Quote:
Ohio Fox News anchor Kristi Capel didn’t know Lady Gaga had a “gorgeous voice,” but as we learn in a recent Fox 8 brief, that’s hardly the most damaging thing that Capel doesn’t know.
While recapping the Oscars, Capel showed a clip from Lady Gaga’s Sound of Music medley performance and explained that she’s used to a different kind of Gaga performance.
The awestruck anchor commented: “It’s hard to really hear her voice with all the jigaboo music — whatever you want to call it — jigaboo!”
|
I lol every time I read it. Her defense against the social media backlash was that she didn't know it was a real word that had meaning.

I'm willing to bet that she's got a racist in the family that's used the term to describe any dance music and it unfortunately it stuck with her.
Sucks to be her, but this isn't the worst thing in the world. I love the reaction of the cohost, that laughter has to be from the shock of hearing such an inappropriate term on air.

It makes me lol. Obviously she didn't know what the word meant, which makes it worse to me...she is on the news and has lived on this planet and has never heard jigaboo?

Re: More blithe racism
I've actually never heard the term Jigaboo.
Which is why I wouldn't randomly use it on a news report when describing someone else!
(especially when it clearly has a derogatory sound to it).

Re: More blithe racism
I think I know the word from that song from Hair, but I don't know that I've heard people in real life using it. So I could see that maybe if she'd heard some shitty old racist regularly calling a type of music that, she might really think it was just a name for some music genre.
If that's the case, I hope she's all up in that racist's shit about this.

Re: More blithe racism
The skinheads in my CO high school used it all the time, maybe even exclusively instead of other slurs..shortened to "Jig" usually. I thought it must be pretty common seeing as how my school was tiny and had exactly 2 non-white people.
I never hear it in the South.

Yeah, as loathe as I am to come to the defense of the south here, there are racists all over the place.
And I am shocked that you people have never seen Hair. It's not like it's that good or anything, but I thought it was mandatory.
Not going to make this embed, but since I already looked it up to confirm it was the song I was thinking of:

Re: More blithe racism
I've heard the term a lot, unfortunately -- mostly from my Dad and his redneck compatriots. Also, I remember the use of "Jig" in a couple older movies, such as this scene from Enter The Dragon:

Re: More blithe racism
The slang word jigaboo dates back to 1905-1910, perhaps a blend of jig, a sprightly dance, and bugaboo, something to be feared.

I've used the term quoted, i.e. referring to other people's use, or to reference the word itself. I'm indifferent to using a reference to inappropriate terms.
Has anybody heard a formal apology from the newscaster? I think there should have been one by now.
Oh, yes:
Kristi Capel apologizes to viewers for using racially offensive term | cleveland.com
Quote:
"I just want to take a moment to address a comment that I made yesterday that got a lot of attention," Capel said at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday. "It's important for me to let you know that I deeply regret my insensitive comment. And I truly did not know the meaning of the word and would never intentionally use such hurtful language."
[...]
"I sincerely apologize for using that language and promise to learn from this, and I hope you will give me that chance," Capel said Tuesday morning.
|
Seems sincere enough.

Tennessee lawmaker lady whose last name is Butt wrote a comment about how there should be a "NAAWP". But she's totally not a racist, and how dare you suggest otherwise.

i have no problem with you using the word. it's my much mocked position that people should use these shitty words into submission. which is probably why it lost its power and isn't used much any more. people have moved on and use words like "Minority" when describing those other folks who are just like us.

I fully expect "the" to lose its power any day now and am anticipating the time when people will move on to new definite articles.

I've only heard it once, in Police Academy. (Copeland calls Hooks one at the driving test course)
