I think it is a good thing. I ask the question because I want to know the options and the ways that other people give or help others. It could give me and others ideas on what they can do for people. It has already helped me find great stuff and hopefully will encourage others to give their time and money to those in need.

Thanks. I wouldn't argue with any of that, Crumbo.

Charitable Giving - Update!
I've been having fun giving to various organizations over the last few months. I have officially budgeted $50 from every paycheck to donate. I started with $50 a month budgeted but that went too fast so I have a little more than doubled it so that I can do more with it.
I have given to some charities suggested in this thread and found a few others. It is great because I can get the same hunt and kill satisfaction of shopping while doing something helpful for others and not cluttering my space with useless crap.
Here are the places I have given so far:
FF
Oregon Food Bank
Kiva
Heifer International
This American Life
Doctors Without Borders
ACLU
Charity: water
Playpumps International
That last was a really cool find that a co-worker suggested where they set up water pumps that run on merry-go-rounds. Great idea!
If anyone has any other charity ideas, please let me know.

Re: Charitable Giving
That's awesome Crumb! Also the rest of you.
I don't have money anymore, but I do at least give a 20 to our local volunteer search and rescue team (they are the first responders when people get lost or trapped in the water, as the Coast Guard takes time to get here). I gave time to the Share the Beach turtle nest people. Mostly these days I write letters.
I did think that tree planting thing we did as a whole board was awesome, seems like a lot of bang for the buck. Can't remember the name of it now.

Re: Charitable Giving
Yeah, that tree planting thing. I will see if I can find info on that.
I feel bad about not volunteering more time, but I tend not to be very good at managing my free time. Without a family though I find I do have some extra cash.

Re: Charitable Giving
My donations go to:
NRA
MFHA
the Disabled Vets Charitable Trust Fund
National Military Family Assoc.
Navy-Marine Corp Relief Society
the local food bank
Habitat for Humanity
a variety of horse rescues
I also give substantial time and incidental money to a variety of local causes, and do a sock and sweater drive for the local VA hospital every year.

Re: Charitable Giving
We usually give to organizations whose mission has a personal connection to us. For instance, local animal rescue organizations, because we have two rescued cats.
On a related note, we are in the midst of my least favorite time of year at work; the United Way campaign. I simply choose not to give money to UW. Yet, I can't opt-out of the bombardment my company puts on every year to strong arm and/or guilt trip people into pledging money.

Do you know that so-called "volunteers" don't even get paid?

So I have started a little spread sheet to track what I am giving and where it is going per month. I need ideas on where my money will do the most good. So far I have only Oregon Food Bank on my list. It is good because it is local and has a single simple focus: getting food to the hungry.
Anyone have any suggestions of good secular charities that I might be interested in?
Anyone else give regularly? How much do you generally give? Who do you usually give it to? If you don't you could take this opportunity to start.

I'd donate to or Programs funded by NSF. Check for television networks like PBS they keep commercials to a minimum because they run on funds and they help educate the youth.

Re: Charitable Giving
I'm occasionally frustrated by, but ultimately resigned to, the fact that our biggest "donations" are not tax-deductible. We just give directly to people who we personally know need it.
Proportion of donation that goes to the intended beneficiary: 100%.
The only real difficulty is being able to continue a normal relationship with someone to whom you've given money. You need to be vigilant and self-monitor to avoid feelings/actions of power, superiority, entitlement, etc, but so far I think I can say that I'm pretty good at being able to give one day and have forgotten about it, for all practical purposes, by the next day.
