Re: The Dark Tower Film and TV Series Combo
Okay so I was at the bar and got drawn into a Dark Towers debate, which I get h8t for in chats.
But some inspiration: one of the guys recommended Timothy Olyphant for the role. Which I can actually get behind.

You can tell your so-called "friends" that they are WRONG. He hasn't acted in anything good.

Bort. Bort. I love you. You're like a BrotherMan to me. But Timothy Olyphant was in the greatest tv series of all time. OF ALL TIME.

Re: The Dark Tower Film and TV Series Combo
The two movies I can recall him in (Hitman and Die Hard: John McClain is Still Alive?) I didn't particularly care for him in. I'm not laying the blame on him alone as I think there was sum dullness to the writing and to how the respective characters were supposed to be that plays a part in the perception. Also the TV series he's a part of already (Justified) I don't particularly care for. Again, I'm not laying the blame on him alone. He's just a whole guilt from association thing as far as I'm concerned.
Just saying.

I love Timothy Olyphant, but not as Roland! He always seems on the edge of a brilliant psychotic break, and Roland is a...trudger. His lack of imagination and dogged goal seeking without much thought to the purpose are too central to the character.

Re: The Dark Tower Film and TV Series Combo
Today I have purchased for my grubby mitts the last three books in the series.
Someday I even hope to get around to reading them!

Re: The Dark Tower Film and TV Series Combo
I just finished my reread of the series last night. The last three are a mixed bag. They have moments that I absolutely adore, and the ending is perfect, but, not to spoil too much, I could really do without the deus ex machine generator introduced in book 6 (hinted in book 5) and everything to do with it.

Well, maybe he's up for it...I haven't seen any of his work, personally. If they make Susannah a skinny white girl though, I will have to boycott.

I am going to reserve judgment until I see him in the role. (I'm thinking of Tom Cruise as Lestat and how that turned out better than I expected.)

Re: The Dark Tower Film and TV Series Combo
And just like that, it's over.
Universal Pulls the Plug on 'The Dark Tower'
Womp womp woooomp The first film was slated to begin production this summer, but shooting was delayed last spring with the studio announcing that it needed to make the project more cost-effective.
That temporary delay became permanent this week, and now deprives Universal of a film series that it had hoped would become a linchpin for its film slate for years to come. [...]
Yet, after being announced with great fanfare last Fall, "The Dark Tower" ran up against a very different corporate culture after Comcast took over the studio in January.
More so than ex-corporate parent General Electric, Comcast leans toward the frugal, and the very expensive "Dark Tower" clearly left the people who control the purse strings uncomfortable.
Following Comcast's acquisition, Universal has shown a willingness to make cuts. [...]
But in cutting "The Dark Tower" from its schedule, Universal does run the risk of alienating one of its most loyal and profitable partners. Imagine Entertainment, Howard and Grazer's production company, has grossed millions of dollars in box-office revenue with hits such as "American Gangster" and "A Beautiful Mind."
On Monday, Universal apparently decided that the risk was too great that "The Dark Tower" wouldn't join that hit list.

Re: The Dark Tower Film and TV Series Combo
Hmm, if Howard believes in the project enough, certainly he could approach another studio?
Not only are we talking legions of DT fans, and King fans in general, we are talking Howard who has a very good track record for making good films.
I think Universal might come to regret this choice. Does anyone know how Warner Bros ended up with the Harry Potter franchise?

Re: The Dark Tower Film and TV Series Combo
I think Howard has a good shot of getting another studio interested. It's a lot of money and an innovative structure, though, so not the easiest deal to make.

Re: The Dark Tower Film and TV Series Combo
Yeah, the right person would see the potential though. I am thinking Lasseter at Disney, and whoever gave Harry Potter the green light at Warner Bros.

Re: The Dark Tower Film and TV Series Combo
Harry Potter wasn't the same kind of risk, though, because there was no tv element. It was also a huge sell-out literary franchise that would be ongoing concurrently with the movies. There was probably a bidding war for the film rights.

I think the risk was fucking it up bad enough that your studio headquarters were surrounded by angry kids looking for blood
This is a big project, and a big risk, and possibly a huge money pit. I hope someone sees the possibility.

Producer Brian Grazer, who is working on the somewhat pared-down Dark Tower franchise with director Ron Howard, just told MTV that The Dark Tower is going to be an HBO TV series. And that he's still planning on doing a movie.
THEY READ MY POSTES!

Before we freak out, remember that this isn't an official announcement; there's no press release or anything. Maybe he's just doing Hollywood-speak and hopes that it'll be an HBO series, or even an HBO-type series. Maybe HBO and Grazer are just talking, and Grazer is optimistic they can work out a deal.

Welp, the tv-film trilogy combo is out, but a single movie
may still be made . Warner Bros is mulling it over and should make a decision shortly. Frontrunner for Roland this time is Russel Crowe. Yay. Perfect casting. No really. I love it.
I do not love it. I think it's shit. That was sarcasm.

Re: The Dark Tower Film and TV Series Combo
I'm just throwing these names out there so that it goes into the universe and are never mentioned again in the same breath as young childe Roland.
Johnny Depp
Ashton Kutcher
George Clooney
Ryan Reynolds
Bradley Cooper
Hugh Jackman
Josh Hartnett
So that hopefully we can get past all this bullshit and the rightful man is cast in the part.
