You don't have to use the VM - there are instructions on how to set-up the tools under Linux (non VM) too.

They recommend a VM so that you're less likely to mess up a real system when your compiler crashes but it's really no more risky than writing any program that might crash in C or C++. If you go for Java then it should be pretty much impossible to damage the system - unless you accidentally code something that exploits one of Java's security holes.

Oh, hey! I did get the VM working and I am having a hell of a time writing the lexer rules. I think I watched too far forward in the parsing videos, and I forgot all the details of the first stage. I need to go back to my lexer notes, which I didn't have with me the first time I took a crack at it. This shit is challenging but it's a blast. I'm having a great time with it.

I'm definitely using C, though. It's my favorite.

I finally completed the lexer tonight, and I'm going to get a jump on the parser right away.

I'm glad I'm not trying to take this course in real time, because it is super time-consuming. It's a cool way to kill a weekend, though.

I've got behind with this by being busy with a couple of work projects and then suffering from a series of miserable colds.

* ceptimus will watch the lexer videos again today and see if he can begin to catch up.

I think that DeduceIt lecture was added since I watched first time - or if it was there I missed it. Alex even looks and sounds older in it than in the other lectures.

I'm on this! Watching week 1 videos now. :weirdtv:
I just realized you posted the link to the Coursera course - that one still works, of course even thought it's past the sell-by date, but the official self-paced version of the same course is direct at Stanford here.
