Many times a light blade can be just as effective as a heavy one...

This is certainly true, but I've a sabre, which isn't designed for traditional sword-duelling as much as running people through on the charge.

Aren't sabres curved blades much like scimitars? That would make it a pretty shoddy piercing weapon, thus not suitable for running people through.
