Re: Bend Over, Facebook is Back
Oh, no doubt. Every FB game that I have personally tried has been a SC game, but I know they have Bejeweled and Scrabble and stuff on there, and those are obviously not SC. I think Farmville looks pretty SC, but I've never played it for that reason, so my opinion is uninformed.

Gosh, you're so polite. I was under the impression that most people just spam their whole friends list with that stuff, and it's acceptable to just hit "Ignore" on all these requests.

Re: Bend Over, Facebook is Back
I like Real mathematics based games where the maths is simple and obvious.
Tetris is such a game - take all the shapes that can be made out of four squares simply connected by their edges, and drop them at random into a grid ten cells wide and 20(ish) high. Of course the choice of the size of the grid was made by someone - and chosen to make the difficulty of the game 'about right'; but the rules are simple and clear enough not to offend one's aesthetic sense.

The only game I've played on there is Bejeweled. I liked it so much that I bought the app for my iPod.

I once played a Spreadsheet Commander game where you were a drug dealer. Mainly the game consisted of buying and selling drugs in relation to the drug busts and availability in an area.

Next time you get one of these requests, there will be a button that says "block this application" or "ignore all invites from this friend." Pick which is appropriate.

Re: Bend Over, Facebook is Back
Yeah I was not impressed. I like how he responded to the question about "opt-in". It is obvious that the questioner was asking why each new data-sharing feature is enabled instead of disabled by default (i.e. "opt-out" instead of "opt-in"). So his response that the entire site is "opt-in" because nobody is forcing anyone to sign up and post stuff was a total non sequitur. I suspect he knows that, too.

Joining Facebook is a conscious choice by vast numbers of people who have stepped forward deliberately and intentionally to connect and share. ~snip~ But, other than name and gender, nothing requires them to complete these fields or share information they do not want to share. If you’re not comfortable sharing, don’t.

In other words, if you don't like it, gtfo.

There are state, federal and international laws and case precedents that you’d need to examine to answer that question. It would require more space than we have here.

Everything is opt-in on Facebook. Participating in the service is a choice. We want people to continue to choose Facebook every day. Adding information — uploading photos or posting status updates or “like” a Page — are also all opt-in. Please don’t share if you’re not comfortable.
|
I.e., I gotcher opt-in right here, beeyotch.

Re: Bend Over, Facebook is Back
This is one worry I have with cloud computing and other "Don't mind the company behind the curtain, just give your information to the great and powerful server," plans. It may start out all happy and innovative but a team change and all of a sudden they want to stab you in the back.
Linking to videos or photos from another site can be a bit safer than just uploading them to facebook.

I have to say I'm with him on this. Who puts stuff up on facebook that they want to keep private? Isn't the whole point of it to share your info out? It's not email or IM. If that photo or comment or whatever isn't for public consumption, why the hell are you posting it up on the internet in the first place? I don't understand the cries of "Facebook made my info public!" when it's like, no, you made your info public when you decided to upload it to Facebook. Or in other words, if you don't like it, gtfo.
I am not speaking to the specific cases like two Christmases ago when they were linked up with Amazon and Fandango and were updating your facebook status with "so-and-so just bought the DVD of Star Trek!" or whatever. That shit was just stupid and fucked up.

Re: Bend Over, Facebook is Back
Because it's a bait and switch. They sign up for one product: sharing certain information, contact details, witty status updates, photos with their friends, family and other select individuals.
And then they wake up the next day and actually, they're sharing it with the world, which is not so palatable.
I enjoy facebook immensely, but I keep an eye on the privacy settings.

Re: Bend Over, Facebook is Back
Facebook was originally pretty walled in, and was used primarily for college students to communicate amongst themselves, and it expanded to include other groups in increments. I don't know whether it was explicitly stated* or anything, but getting people to use their real names was very much a matter of trust not very long ago. A lot of people were only willing to do that because they believed that it wasn't going to go beyond that.
I don't think it's unreasonable for users to be able to opt in, rather than out, of having their information disseminated beyond what they initially signed on for.
* Most of the time, I try to extricate myself from social obligations rather than seeking out new ones, so I've never even considered using Facebook long enough to look up their terms or anything.**

As soon as there is a viable alternative to Facebook, along the lines of FB 2006, I'm closing my account there and moving.
vm, you know to make the internet work. Get onto it would ya?

Pretty good for some old guy! Time was the edgy people would use their account (WHICH YOU ONLY GOT ONE OF BECAUSE COLLEGE EMAIL ADDRESS) to make some fake character like Superman or Jesus or something, and then it was funny to be friends with those guys. Only if They found out about it they made you change it, or something, so they were Stalinists even back then.
I went in and deleted everything in my profile today and removed about a quarter of my (paltry list of) friends. Maybe next time I'll remove a quarter of who's left, and then do it again, each time getting stricter on how close someone has to be in order to make the cut.
Maybe I might as well delete the account, but in a weird way it's nice to know it's there. People change email addresses or cell phone numbers or whatever, but that'll always be my facebook account, presumably, so as a last resort someone could get in touch through it if they lost the other stuff.
This is pretty stupid, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to delete my college-specific residence information (i.e. my dorm/room number and mailbox number). It just isn't there, anywhere. I even tried changing it back to say I was still a student to see if that would make it show, but it didn't.
