This could go here or in the rant thread, but - I seem to be fucking things up just as hard and fast as I possibly could. I'm on the verge of losing financial aid which will very likely force me to drop out. Just... fuck. I know I can do it - except for a few specific subjects like parts of calculus actually learning the material remains pretty easy for me - but I'm so shitty at all the core skills of being a student, organization, study habits, punctuality, staying on task. I mean, I've known that for years, but I've managed to kind of balance everything out in the end, even when I screwed up a class. Only now I've fallen off well and good this time, and I'm not sure if I can get back up. I just needed to vent it somewhere. Fuck.

Meh...

So my advisor decided that 1. she was going to present the paper (mind you, I was first author) and 2. she would only give me $1000 for the trip, which going to Europe (and having a $300 fee just to get into the conference!) didn't seem worth it to me. I also don't really know any relatives there, meaning I'd get a hotel. It also was scheduled for during the last week of classes when I would have some big assignments due, so I decided it wasn't worth it. I could go to Europe and visit relatives and not pay for a hotel and end up spending a similar amount of money, except I could have it be pure vacation, so...

I found out later I could've gotten money from the department as well that might've covered most of my remaining expenses, but oh well.

So, for my sins, I signed on for a post-grad paper (community ecology), on top of my full-time job. Finding it pretty stimulating, actually, but juggling all the demands on my time has been... interesting.

Anyway, got an A+ for my first assignment, writing a research proposal. Now I've got to actually do said proposal... which looks like involving an annoying amount of data wrangling just to get started on the interesting stuff. But making progress. Good to be back in the science study seat.

But there might be a way to roll it into course credit in the U. I hear good things about the material in the course and while the Yanks have been navel gazing over racial issues I’ve been taking more interest in indigenous issues in Canada.

Also, there are other Canadians in the forum and it might even be of interest to the resident Kiwi as well.
