So where is this Foucault pendulum in a vacuum with a prediction as to which way it will move, with no mechanical starting mechanism, based upon the location it is on the earth.

One would think every university in the world would have this setup to evidence the moving earth .. alas, no.

Jerome, it's a pendulum, not a perpetual motion device.

I though the whole point was it moves because the earth is moving ... ohh, so it doesn't show a moving earth and is a fraud claim. Thanks!!

Either the earth makes it move, or it doesn't.

Changing the claim to be the motion of the earth makes it move in a certain direction, well prove it.

You thought wrong!

Couldn't you have just read Wikipedia before going on this tangent?

How is the motion direction not determined by the mechanical means used to start the motion?

Shall we read Wikipedia together, Jerome?

"A Foucault pendulum requires care to set up because imprecise construction can cause additional veering which masks the terrestrial effect."

The claim is the motion of the earth causes the pendulum to change direction. Is this no longer what you think the article says?

You didn't say "the motion of the earth causes the pendulum to change direction". You said "I though [sic] the whole point was it moves because the earth is moving". It was the latter I was responding to.

How is that Wikipedia reading coming along?

Yea, and what are those "care steps" taken to not influence the direction of the swinging pendulum?

lol

Since this is the actual science thread and I'm bored with Jerome until he comes up with a good response to which direction to look with our fanciful ocularius device, some good videos about the Coriolis effect, which is related to the pendulum.

Shall we read the next line of the Wikipedia page together, Jerome?

"The initial launch of the pendulum is critical; the traditional way to do this is to use a flame to burn through a thread which temporarily holds the bob in its starting position, thus avoiding unwanted sideways motion..."

You already admit an electromagnet is needed to counter the air!!

What is the precision device used to start the pendulum in a perfect angle?

Flame burning a thread, yea, not exactly a precision method there pal.

Hell, the heat of the flame could cause enough of a change to push the pendulum in one direction or the other.

All it needs is a slight push.

On display, your ignorance of thermodynamics too.

One has to be ignorant of real science and indoctrinated by scientism to think the earth is in motion.

Hey, how about that astronot saying we destroyed the technology to go to the moon!!

Anyone want to bet Space X sends exactly zero people around the moon next year, and it will be forgotten, then in a couple of years he will claim next year he will send people around the moon?

We all realize Jerome is just trolling, right?

I mean, the birtherism stuff was a bit less obvious, considering how many people really believe that shit (although a fair percentage of them were just IRL trolling as well, just hoping to trick some rubes/using it as a signal for racists).

But I mean, we've moved from "what color is HIV?" to "the Earth is flat and a good telescope can see over the horizon." I mean, I've used a telescope in my life. I assume a lot of you have as well. And you can't see over the horizon with it.

So Jerome was bored and decided he needed a new stupid thing to have fun with. Other people might just literally jerk off, or watch TV, or play video games, or go hiking, or whatever. When Jerome's bored, he decides to become a flat-earther.

I have a hint for Jerome tho! Your next move should be to claim that the Earth is not curved, LIGHT is curved.

These days I kinda feel like it's not really that important or relevant to figure out whether someone is actually willfully ignorant or just faking it. The effect and my reaction to it is much the same either way.

It's not. Foucault pendulums have operated without electromagnets. They stop in a couple of hours, but that's enough to demonstrate the rotation.

I am very interested in your planetarium model. Would you be willing to discuss this in depth in a dedicated thread?
