I figured it was some kind of pipe material. Cross-linked polyethylene, apparently. What an obvious acronym.

Re: This Old House of Ours
PEX pipes have been common in Europe for water supply lines to houses since the 80s. They weren't as common in the USA back then, because the generally higher levels of chlorine added to the water tended to degrade the plastic. The formulation of PEX was changed slightly and it now meets code in most US states - but not California. You have to be careful not to use it anywhere that's exposed to daylight: the ultraviolet in the light causes the PEX to harden, and eventually crack.

Re: This Old House of Ours
In other news, we are completely pleasantly surprised by our reaction to the train. I thought I would feel annoyed-to-neutral at best about the train traffic, but so far we love it!
Whenever a train goes by, we go "choo choo train!" and if we're not already outside, we sometimes run to a window to look at it and wave. We're having fun identifying the types of trains we see. It's mostly commuter/passenger trains, but every once in a while it will just be a random engine taking a car or two who-knows-where. One time we even saw a couple of those pickup trucks with the special railroad attachments under the wheels.
No freight trains so far, which probably helps with lack of annoyance. Sometimes but not always, the train will be like "ding! ding! ding! ding! ding!", but only one time have they given us the full train horn. We're not near any crossings (the roads dip under the tracks), which also has to do with that, I'm sure.
Looking back, we should not have been surprised by how happy we are. Trains are fucking dope and everybody knows it.
Choo motherfucking choo!

Re: This Old House of Ours
In related train news, the other evening we were doing our Lego advent calendars in the Lego room and we heard like this rumble like a train but it was steady. We walked out and looked up and there a train sat.
It stayed probably 15-20 minutes which just seemed like forever as they normally zip by.
They gave a little horn before they took off.
It was so cool.

Re: This Old House of Ours
Today is our dodecaversary.
We have grown closer and more in love with the passing of time as we share our experiences.
It’s hard to remember the before times.
I feel so lucky to have this life, and I look forward to a lot more years of passing choochoo trains in this awesome house in this awesome city.

Re: This Old House of Ours
Here's a view from the back porch. It's been raining on and off, mostly on, for about a week.
Zoom in on the trestle for the "Southern Pacific Lines" medallion. I am obsessed with these trains.
Backyard_train.jpg
The previous people left behind a lot of plants. There were three inside the house and I have moved them all to the sink, under the window, and I am watering them. No idea what they are.
plants1.jpg
There are also a bunch of potted plants in the back yard. I see aloe (I think) on the left and tomatoes on the right, but I don't know about most of the rest of them. Some cacti, I guess. The rain has been watering them, so I haven't paid them much attention at all until now.
plants2.jpg
There's a persimmon tree in the front yard, kind of dark to see it in the picture, since it's almost nighttime. Our neighbor came by and picked a bunch of them for himself and for us, which mom is going to take with her because I do not care for them. I thought it was a pomegranate tree, but life is filled with disappointments.
persimmion.jpg
There's also a mandarin tree (not pictured), I think, and I will be thrilled if that ends up being the case.

Re: This Old House of Ours
We took down our Christmas decorations and stowed them, and we have unpacked more stuff.
Lieutenant Kevin (ES’s mom) came for Christmas which was fun but also draining.
LK helped us set up our kitchen area which was very helpful. (We actually held off unpacking that stuff knowing she would help.)
She helped make a variety of small repairs and bought us chairs for our bar island. We have similar (but lower quality) chairs for our dining table. Love those tacks.
Our LED Xmas tree was made by Govee. I looked them up and found that they make a variety of LED products.
I think of them as being fun apartment decorations as they don’t require intensive installation using double sided tape mostly.
With our tall ceilings, the color really pops.
It’s called Govee Immersion.
We have really been enjoying it.
It does just draw you in. The lights can respond to what’s on the t screen using the camera, there is also a music mode which uses your phone mic to sync light effects to music.
I find it fun for most TV shows but I think it really shines with cartoons and bright, pretty movies.
Scale is hard to tell, but that’s our 65 inch TV. The stand the previous owners left (which is awesome as it’s a great stand)

Re: This Old House of Ours
Back when the earth was young and I was attending University of Georgia the first time. (Pre Y2K even), I was sitting outside of Creswell Hall (shitty freshman dorm) smoking a cigarette as was my want, when a young lady asked me what some crossword clue was.
Rather than tell her, I teased her for not knowing and we were almost immediately friends.
We were both fucked up and didn’t deal well with others just in different ways.
Sam was from Jamaica, moved to Atlanta when she was a child and went to an artsy magnate school for high school.
She found racist jokes fascinating but lamented that no one would tell her any. I was happy to oblige, I’m pretty sure that I told her just about every racist joke I knew (growing up all the jokes I knew were about sex, were racist or were both about sex and racist.)
She majored in art at UGA.
I met ES and ultimately bought the house in Jefferson and got married. Sam gave us a large abstract painting as a housewarming gift.
(Sam attended our wedding in Vegas abd a couple years later she married Aubrey in Jamaica.)
This upcoming December is their 10 year and they are returning to party much like ES and I did got our ten year.
Anyway, the painting moved with us to our first place here in San Jose where it hung on the only wall where it would fit half hidden by a table.
Today, I got it hung on a nice wall, so I guess I’m moved in

Re: This Old House of Ours
Since our house is at the corner and the train line is our back property line, we walk down the side of our house and under the tracks to arrive at Fuller park.
We take the girls there
Fuller is a narrow park that runs between the street and the train tracks
A train passed while we walked
There is another park which is a block away, but Fuller is basically at our house

Re: This Old House of Ours
We have a "Fuller Park" in Ann Arbor that is basically a big open field and a swimming pool, so barely fuller.

Re: This Old House of Ours
TIL: Fuller is a surname that comes from the process of “walking” or “tucking” wool, where water and soap (in the early days urine) were beaten or literally walked into the wool to both clean and mat fibers. The Surnames Walker and Tucker come from this process.

I HAVE PEX FOR WATER. I love it. It doesn't freeze and earthquakes can't crack it.
One of the plants outdoors if not more, are definitely geraniums

Of course the grass is green, it's wintertime!
In drought-ridden California, we have brown grass in the summer.

Re: This Old House of Ours
We have started working on our Lego display room.
We got two new kallax shelves from ikea and three large tables from Amazon.
Here are the two white kallax shelves, I’m expanding my medieval/fantasy area.
Mesa Ladrillos will sit upon that L shaped island made by two of the tables. Third table is against the wall next to a Billy bookcase.
ES also worked on our storage room.

Your posts inspired me to replace the two brown bookshelves I had in the living room with white Billy's, so thanks for that. The drive to Ikea in Westland also gave me an excuse to get some Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken which I haven't had since I came back to Michigan, and goddamn I love that chicken.
