It looks like a power cable. I actually looked for a plug on the end.

Re: There, I Fixed It
I wish I had a picture of the minivan we had when I was younger. The radiator had been replaced with one that was a slightly different model. It had two lines right under the cap, while the original had only one. So, the other line was plugged with a small length of rubber hose, some wire, and a small twig.

Didn't someone here point me at a place for buying those? Whoever it was, the place came through -- we got exactly the part we wanted, super easy.

My dad has a 50's Ford pickup. The side front panel was damaged so he replaced it with plywood. The jokes about termites catching up with us were never-ending.

I think that someone was me and the place was my brother's company http://www.RepairClinic.com.
If not, shameless plug accomplished.

Re: There, I Fixed It
Years ago, a friend and I were touring the south of France on a motorcycle holiday. I had a Suzuki then but he was riding an old Norton Commando.
One exhaust of his Norton kept falling off and we couldn't find any motorcycle shops with the correct replacement part. I improvised a repair using a tent peg and a small rock. That repair outlasted the rest of the bike. I think I still have a photo somewhere, but I don't know where to begin looking for it...

Re: There, I Fixed It
I'd wager this is not duct tape, but aircraft tape. It looks like duct tape, but has some sort of deathgrip-like adhesive and is reinforced with steel wool strands. You can't rip it with your hands. It costs something like twenty five bucks a roll.
Still an extremely temporary fix of course.

Re: There, I Fixed It
This thread also reminds me of when my dad would go down to the junkyard and find similar k-car parts to put in his when they wore out. The connectors were never quite the same, but he made them fit.
Fit? Yes. Work? Sometimes. It took him a couple tries to find a wiring arrangement for the turning light that didn't honk the horn.

Re: There, I Fixed It
Certain things should not exist and one of them is aircraft tape.

My parents' K-car had this issue where the engine fan would never turn off, so if it was parked for a long time, it would run down the battery.
My brother had somehow come into a huge box of lightswitches, so he hooked one up to the engine fan and installed it on the dash so you could turn the fan off manually. He did an uncharacteristically neat job of it, too, so it looked almost like it came that way from the factory. (I have a mental image of it complete with the wall plate, but I'm fairly sure that's just a memory embellishment.)
That car was hilarious.
PS: Gonad tape. I win!
