It's very difficult to housebreak siblings. Hang in there.

Well, I've got her to fetch groceries while I'm laid up with this broken knee, but can't get her to follow a piece of string at all.
(PS. She is actually pretty great, and I'm buying a house we can both live in)

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Wow! I guess they knew each other when they were babies. What a small world.
(except the personalities are totally swapped)
So, anyway, beyelzu's going to take the new girl to the vet on Thursday. She's like 7 or 8 months old and she's never been. She's going to get her shots and her checkup and get spayed. I'm hoping the surgery might help her personality, but if not, no big deal. She won't be the only bitch in the house. She's nice enough to the people, if indifferent. I think the boys don't like her as much because she doesn't do the dog and pony show that V does, but she's my little princess who puddles in my lap and lets me brush her while we watch TV. She and V are starting to come around, I think. They are no longer terrified of each other. They still fight constantly, but they have many options to avoid each other in this big house and they choose not to so I'm taking that as a good sign. She went to sleep in her hiding place under the bed last night, but when I woke up she was on the floor next to it instead of under. I'm hoping to get her into the bed with me eventually.

V and Miscue, eh? They make nice bookends, and orange and a grey tabby.
I'm hoping to get a dog and cat after I get a home for myself. Not sure which to get first, which to get second.

Q is home from the vet. They're now both fixed, microchipped, and caught up on shots. To celebrate I threw V outside because he would not leave my princess alone to recover. I think he just missed her.

Get them both at the same time, then they grow up together and are pals.

Aren't they supposed to be terrified of the dustbuster? They're not. They just sit there and watch me. "That's right, bitch. Clean up that litter mess. It's what we keep you around for."

I'm this much closer to that day (I found a house I fell in love with), but I'm thinking I'm going to get shelter animals, so I don't know what their ages may be.
My cat was so laid back and people friendly that it's sort of what I'm expecting and hoping a new cat would be like. Although he did terrify the toy poodle next door, being much bigger and floofier that the yappy little thing. So friendly towards just humans isn't enough.
The problem being, cats and dogs are complex enough to have significant personalities, not just breed stereotypes, that it's pretty much a crapshoot what sort of character one winds up with.

If you adopt from a foster group they will be able to tell you more about a particular animal's personality. The foster parent has lived with the animal and knows how it relates to the other foundlings, including cats sometimes.
Many people go for the shelter and that is a great I have a shelter dog actually. But foster groups need support too. It may be a better fit for you.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Fostered pets are almost always a good bet. Also try some of the more progressive shelters, which often do extensive behavioral testing and many of which will have fostering arrangements as well, for those that need it.
As a general rule, try no kill shelters, sanctuaries, smaller shelters that don't contract with animal control, and things like that. Again, as a general rule, the more community services they offer--spay and neuter clinics, training and behavioral consultations, pet food banks, etc.--the better your chances of them being conscientious and knowledgeable about their adoptions.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Talking with lisarea and Bro in the chat yesterday I realized I have never posted pictures of my pack. The pictures I showed them were only meh, but I got some better ones up. So enjoy the fluffy black cuteness of Dante, my Aussie-Border Collie mix, and Sylivie the cream colored pound puppy puppourri.
This is shortly after we got the new sister, Dante is in my lap watching the white blur of furricane Sylvie.
Ready for her close up, this is snoozing Sylvie. I love how her eyes become little sleepy half moons.
Waiting by the window for the pizza guy. As soon as the word "pizza" is uttered - Dante learned to assume this post in readiness. Sister soon learned to follow his lead.
O HAI!
Sylvie striking a pose:
Dante and Mr. Monde at the park
Both of them are great kissers, but here Dante lays one on him

Aren't they beautiful and talented. I love the graphic impact of the black and white. My cat is black and if I were to get another one, I would be sorely tempted to get a white one or a tuxedo just for the Art Deco effect.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Thanks! One word of warning, I will say I swore I wouldn't get a white one with the challenges of black Dante fur on the clothes and sofas. But we saw a euthenasia notice for Sylvie and had to do something. They are quite the pair, but white and black fur is a real houskeeping challenge.
Their personalities are as polarized as their coats and they make quite the dynamic duo. He is really gentle in cuddles, she is a brick house wiggle worm. He delicately eats his food and savours it, she wolfs hers down like a piggy. He is the little gentleman, she is the rough and tumble broad. He is independant and likes to go out on his own, she is really needy and glues herself to you. He sings contemplatively, she dances on her hind legs like a drunk party girl.
I wouldn't have it any other way now.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Speaking of pet hair, I want to get this for my long-haired ginger. She leaves tufts of her fur all over my dark green carpet. Plus, since they're not scared of the dustbuster, I am ready to up the ante.
Update: and are friends now, and Q follows V around constantly. We think she's a little bit "special". She has a flat face and long fur and she's is just dumb as hell. I'm not worried about it, because it's not like she has to go to college or do anything but look good, and she looks damn good. But sometimes I'm just like, omg bless her heart she is so stupid.
