It's time this "don't look directly at the sun" shit was nailed, guys. It's a myth*. The sun's rays do not come close to burning holes in your retina in milliseconds, or even in seconds. Yes, that is the advice that is always given, but that has as much to do with established habit and fear of litigation as it has to do with science. The belief appears to be based on learned articles referring to earlier learned articles in a web of reflexive referencing centred on advice given out by NASA which itself derives almost entirely from a myth handed down in astronomy circles that Galileo Galilei blinded himself by looking at the sun too much, so you shoudn't do it.

I am now putting myself in the position of a science denier in parallel with anti-vaxers, covid deniers and climate sceptics, with this guy as my Andrew Wakefield:

I want to think it is innocent, but surely if it was being moved to a museum or storage one would think it would be in a crate and handled by moving pros? I am not American and still unreasonably angry at the image, as I have NO problem believing the worst of that whole family/administration.

Yeah, I've heard that explanation, but I have the same questions about people just marching out carrying things like that.

Ok most of this is in the linked article, but first off it’s a thing we were told as kids because its effects on the lens are most damaging to children, with early excessive UV exposure being connected to early cataracts, or lens fogging. It’s not that they will go blind right away but that they would go blind (now fixable) sooner.

Second when people say directly they do mean directly dead center, not just in the vicinity of. Most of our eye’s resolution is shit, except the fovea in the center where we get most of our detail from, and because of that it’s the area you want to take the least risks with. The general advice is to look to the side of the sun so that any tiny chance of damage happens to a less important area of the eye. Additionally the color of your eyes matters with lighter eyes not blocking as much UV as darker ones, increasing the damage in comparison. The same reason people with dilated pupils as more susceptible.

Finally, there are cases of going blind in seconds and most if not all involve telescopes. Focused sunrays can easily burn holes in paper or fabric and occasionally eye piece sun filters pop under the heat suddenly exposing the person’s eye to focused rays. Telescope sun filters always go on the front.

But yeah, quickly looking at the sun without additional circumstances won’t suddenly blind you.
