The impression that Bush's response was sarcastic, and the suggestion that the response made the girl cry (not something else such as the laughing crowd), have been added by the journalists. And casting Bush's subsequent sympathy as 'backpeddling' was classic spin.

By the time Watser dubbed it 'letting out the inner asshole' the picture of prejudice feeding off media-spin is pretty complete, I think.

...instead of ignoring it and waiting for it to go away.

But you needn't take the blame for all the bollocks. It is not your fault, for example, that viscousmemories argues badly and when called on it, tries to cover himself with ever-poorer arguments.

Basically Bush had a non alcoholic beer with a blue collar voter and mostly sat in awkward silence in 2005. What they did talk about, Bush didn't realize he was outdoing himself and being a condescending asshole at the same time. When the man responded to Bush about what he likes to do, what his hobbies were, by citing going out on the water in his aluminum boat with his kids for small fishing, Bush told a story about being on a Yacht with an Arab prince bringing up huge fish. Just in general, being a rich condescending asshole. The voter later said he still wouldn't have voted for Kerry, even after being a little set off over Bush.

Though, that article was on the Onion, the same website who said that the new Michael Jackson killed the old Michael Jackson in 1993, disposed of his body, and has been impersonating him ever since.

So I question the source, but it sounds like a possible scenario.

The article assumes he was joking about America being the worlds worst polluter. But that doesn't make sense. He said this in Japan. Does he think Japan is the World's worst polluter. But that doesn't make sense either, Because isn't China the world's worst polluter? Wait a minute....
