Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
Speaking of analog synthesizers, seeing these two perform together would have been a very big deal back in 2018, as Wilson was telling everyone who asked that there's never be any new Porcupine Tree music (even though they'd been writing new songs on the QT since 2012).
Richard Barbieri is only about 8 months older than me, but we've lived what you might call different sorts of lives. While I was shlubbing my way through college in goddamn Ohio, he was traveling the world as the keyboard player of the new wave/art pop band Japan.

These guys are dope. I am obsessed with the saxophonist, he looks like Tony Cavalero and dances like Jason Sudeikis. They came and played at my work event, how hip is that?

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
There's a tune on the new Porcupine Tree album called Herd Culling, the lyrics of which are based on reports of bizarre goings-on (strange lights, UFOs, cattle mutilations, etc.) at a location in Utah known as the Skinwalker Ranch. This here is a "small screen" version of the video they'll be using while playing the song live.

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
The new PT album is one of their best, if not the best ever. But, as I found out when trying to use the Li'l Puppet's castoff headphones, make sure you have enough bass, or don't bother.
And speaking of great new albums, PFM put out I Dreamed of Electric Sheep last year. A download will get you 2 entire versions, in both English and Italian. Probably their best in many years.

Sock, thanks for the heads-up on that PFM album. Superb stuff. I don't understand a goddamn word of Italian, but those versions of the songs are my favorite because I find the eye-talian language so much more esthetically pleasing to the ear.
Anyhoo, here's another treasure from Steven Wilson's back catalogue.

Saw a reference to the Dalai Lama's book today, and it brought to mind this song by the same name. There are precious few better ways to spend 4.5 minutes.

Porcupine Tree hits the big time tonight. Radio City Music Hall, baby!
Here's a not-too-awful cellphone vid from one of the Canadian shows.

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
I can now die fulfilled, having seen a Porcupine Tree show that was magnificent through and through, despite some technical issues with Steven Wilson's rig during the first set. Touring musicians Nate Navarro (bass) and Randy McStine (guitar, vocals) were perfect choices. We sat on the left (stage right) pretty much directly in the line of Richard Barbieri's amps, and I got a whole new understanding and appreciation for just how important his massive synthesizer generated soundscapes are to the band's overall sound.
They played everything from the new album, and it's beefy as hell live. I had trouble warming up to the song Walk the Plank . . .
. . . but it was superb last night. That one was clearly designed to be played live.
I've also spent some time lately being blown away by British guitar god Guthrie Govan. Here he is 15 years ago improvising over an old Albert King track.
And 7 years ago, as part of Steven Wilson's solo band.
And earlier this year on tour with Hans Zimmer.

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
OMFG, I thought I would be missing this show. Gotta go by myself, but I scored a REALLY damned good seat for PT tonight at The Masonic in SF!
It was only ridiculously expensive, rather than insanely expensive, so I decided (and it's all Matlock's fault ) I just had to say what the fuck.
Now I just have to decide whether to take BART & a Muni bus, or pay for parking in the (S)Nob Hill area.

Hell yeah, Sock! Great score, as that particular show has been sold out for awhile. Enjoy!

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
Yep, they were "sold out," although Live Nation had a few here 'n' there throughout the venue, mostly the extreme sides of the floor, where you probably can't even see the projection screen, but I scored a single (because I'm pathetic and no longer have a prog-head buddy to go with) seat here:
So damned nearly dead center between the stage & sound board, 2nd row of that section.
They sell them at near-scalper prices, but Live Nation actually runs the venue, so I guess you can't call them that, technically.

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
Looks like they dropped Sentimental and subbed in I Drive the Hearse, but other than that it was the same show Lisa and I saw.
During a couple of shows back east, Wilson wasn't feeling well and they shortened the encore by cutting out Halo. I was VERY happy they added that one back in.
During one show they replaced Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before it is Recycled with Half-Light. I'm quite glad they did Last Chance at our show. Sounds for all the world like a song about young love, and then you're neck-deep in Marshall Applewhite's final message before the Heaven's Gate suicides. It's a little jarring even when you know it's coming.
Kinda wish they would have found room for The Creator has a Mastertape, but hey, they only had three hours and 11 studio albums worth of material.
And Creator isn't exactly Gavin Harrison's favorite song to play live.

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
I recently got two albums that have been sitting one my wishlist for quite a while.
The first on is Heilung "Lifa". A folk metal band definitely going deep into the folk mysticism:
This live show recording is impressive, and it looks like the actual show would be even more impressive.
The second is Paradise Lost, "The Plague Within"
Paradise Lost - No Hope In Sight - YouTube
It's hard to get excited about a Paradise Lost album. I have never not liked them, but I haven't found them exciting since 1992 and "Shades of God", which is kind of why it's been sitting on my wishlist since it came out.
That, and I got "I Melt With You" by Modern English stuck in my head this morning. I think this is one of my all-time favorite songs.

If memory serves, Heilung made an appearance in this thread a couple of years ago. They are completely badass.

I looked back in the thread, and you posted the complete show video. I'm not worthy!
I really enjoyed the album, may have to add their other albums to my wish list and purchase them in less than 2 years.

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
Camel is a 70s English prog band with only one remaining original member. They don't do much these days, but when they do it's gold. Especially tasty here are the vocals of Pete Jones, who lost his eyesight to cancer in infancy.

You should get Futha next, then Ofnir. I like their new album but it's a slightly different feel than the first two albums.
Here's the single off the new album.
I would direct you to Wardruna too but listen at your own risk. While I don't think the music is openly far-right, they have some associations with far-right groups. Liiiike..one of their members.
