Possibly because medicine has long ignored women, giving preferential treatment to men's health so womens health has been playing catchup.
Women are 51% of the population and all.

Fair enough. I just wouldn't be offended if a reproductive health place focused on women's health, since women are the ones who reproduce.

Well...usually with some assistance on the inception end.
I also note that the list of men's health services does not include STD screening. I'll bet they provide it, but they don't advertise it?

STD screenings are not a gender specific service, and they offer that at all PPs as far as I know.

Okay, I figured as much...But checkups for 'reproductive or sexual health problems', 'colon cancer screening', 'routine physical exams', and 'urinary tract infections testing and treatment', all listed, are not particularly gender-specific services, either.

Well, STD's would probably fall under "reproductive and sexual health problems" but yeah they might want to be more explicit.

Re: All Gov Funded Organizations Providing Pro-Choice Options Under Attack
Since 2005 or so, a friend and I have been engaged in a fierce war. It all started when our workplace sponsored a breast cancer awareness month. Every female worker was presented with a few gifts care of SGKftC. (At least, I think it was just female workers, I don't recall exactly.) My lady friend hated the breast cancer awareness. Not just the swag, but the whole idea that it was at all necessary. I told her about my experience with the cancer and some random statistics but that didn't sway her.
One of the swag items was a big ol honkin pink coffee cup. We took turns hiding it around the office and lab waiting for the other person to find it. Ha ha! You got me! And on and on it went. This led to us trading the pink products as gifts. A favorite of mine was the tennis balls I got for her, and also a pen she got for me. There have been other things now lost to time.
I've been watching this whole thing with some detachment. But today, I happened across this video and it reminded me, in a big way, exactly what is at stake in this whole mess. Real people. Real people like my mom, who could afford doctors and treatment, but a lot of women can't.
Then I sat down and wrote this email to my friend.
Quote:
It seems our War of the Pink Products should come to an end.
A secret thrill I got out of our breast cancer battle was that I got you to buy a few pink things, which in turn supported a cause you otherwise wouldn't have. As the news broke about SGKftC and their playing politics with their funds, I couldn't help but wonder how this would affect our rivalry. I could hope that not everything that was pink or had a pink ribbon associated with it wasn't about SGKftC, but because they are assholes about "for the Cure" and all the pink things, it doesn't look like my hope will be realized at any time.
I thought I told you once why I didn't think breast cancer awareness wasn't a joke. (But suck it, because I'm saying it again!)For me, it was a very real thing. My mother had a single mastectomy when I was a little boy. I was young enough that I was likely shielded from the worst of it, so it didn't seem all that traumatic from my perspective. I don't know if it was life threatening, but it certainly was life changing.
In the long term I want cancer to go away. A slightly less altruistic desire is to help see that breast cancer goes away. But bringing this desire down to the most practical level, I want anyone who is at risk to be able to get help regardless of who they are, how much money they do or do not have. I was happy to support SGKftC because I thought it was doing some good, even in a very small way. And it was very easy. And I had a good laugh with a great friend to top it all off. And now that I find out they SGKftC is trying to play games with peoples' lives on top of being real assholes with the money they receive, well, I have to say fuck them.
So, it is with a heavy heart that I try to clear my conscience and declare a truce. Let the hostilities between us be at an end.
|
So, now you can see that not only did SGKftC fuck things up in a big way, they also screwed up something small. Imagine that. Bort gives up on jokes.
Fuck you, SGK.

At CPAC, leaders urge steering birth control conversation toward abortion | The American Independent
So, now that birth control is called abortion, this is also relevant to this thrad:

I've been dealing with that kind of attitude from some people for a few years now. An evangelical neighbor of mine is now circulating petitions supporting the Catholic Church against this most recent "dismantling of religious rights in America!!!" I have to be very careful of what I say to her about this, so I'm just saying "no, thank you." Is verreh hard.

As a number of people including Kristof have pointed out:
Quote:
What if organizations affiliated with Jehovah’s Witnesses insisted on health insurance that did not cover blood transfusions? What if ultraconservative Muslim or Jewish organizations objected to health care except at sex-segregated clinics?
|
Or John Cole:
Quote:
I seriously wish other religions would get in on the act. I wish Keith Ellison would start sponsoring bills that allow insurers to cut people’s benefits if they don’t pray to Mecca a certain number of times a day. Or someone Jewish proposing a bill requiring circumcisions or you can’t get health insurance. Just flood the zone with bullshit so people can see how out of control our concept of religious liberty has become.
|
Digby made a good point with her post Borgia Catholics, where she lays out specifics:
Quote:
Catholic institutions all over the country have been providing birth control coverage and the Supreme Court declined to hear their objections. Repeatedly. Maybe that will change now that it's federal, but the fact is that Catholic organizations are already providing birth control coverage to their employees and have been for years:

I am going to tell you guys a secret, and I really don't think this is unique to me.
When I see these creepy ugly old guys talking about like sex and reproduction and stuff, even beyond the horror at the things they're saying, at a purely visceral level, I'm all like EWEWWWEWWWSHUTUPOHGODSTOPEWWWWWWW
I mean, look at those nasty old men up there, sitting there thinking about lady parts and making up rules about them and stuff. So so gross.
