My son inherited my old PC when I built a new one, but it was old and was somewhat troublesome. It started locking up on him a few months ago. I started replacing parts on it, going relatively cheap because it's a 6-7 year old PC. I replaced the video and sound card, because those seem to be the first things that crash, but no luck. I replaced the CMOS battery on the motherboard and that seemed to help (for a while).

Now the PC is dead - locking up before it even gets to try to boot Windows, and I'm trying to figure out what to do. I expect I could replace the motherboard, BUT I'm looking online and I see that refurbished PCs of the same vintage are dirt cheap - as cheap as buying a new motherboard and case.

So I did, because I'm a cheap asshole.

Things started out bad - the graphics driver crashed as soon as the PC booted. I managed to get the system stable for long enough so that I can update the driver. The new driver allows the system to be stable! Score one for me!

Well, this PC really only needs to do 2 things, browse the web and play Minecraft. Apparently, Minecraft is too much for shitty onboard graphics card. Not a problem, because I have a fairly new video card in the old system, 100% compatible with the new....

The new PC's case is built such that I can't plug in the card. :dammitsign:

Time to strip it of what little personal data is on it, pack it up and return it.

I sent them an email, asked if they got my stuff, and told them my skill set and experience were great for the job. The nice lady emailed me back and said she forwarded my stuff to the hiring committee and thanked me for including them in my job search.

And I told the one person I know there that I applied for the job, and she said she would put a good word in for me (though she's not on the hiring committee).

It's been a week, I haven't heard anything, so I'm feeling pretty negative about the whole thing right now.

Today's job hunting environment is a nightmare. There are so many more applicants now than there were years ago. I wouldn't let a week frustrate you.

I applied for a fucking job too. I was supposed to hear in September (it was supposed to start in December). So I called and emailed them early September and they told me it was early yet. Other than that I haven't heard a goddamn thing and if I hadn't fucking called them I know I had heard even less.

Kiddo's sweet, tiny school will close if a special tax is not extended by voters and he will have to go to the enormous shithole in the next town. This school is the only reason I was able to send him to school AT ALL without damaging my conscience too much. I am counting on my neighbors, a large portion of them ignorant rednecks, to do the right thing.

In this case my neighbors means the whole county. There is hope, other schools are on the closure list and hopefully they have supporters too

Hopefully, they didn't attach something stupid to it like they did here. The last school bond issue they tried to pass included $20 million for artificial turf upgrades to the football stadiums and practice fields. Kid's get dirty on the grass fields and they get torn up some by the end of the season.

The voters shot it down.

Then they stripped that out, and had the school bonds for one new school and some major school improvements and programs. That passed.

However, football being important and all, they found a mix of private rich people and corporations to give the $20 million for the turf in exchange for naming and advertising rights. But at least I didn't have to give to that since it's wasn't attached as a property tax.

Nah there's nothing silly on there thank goodness. We're so far in the whole budget wise that the proposal includes shutting down athletics almost completely (which will get the football fans to the polls I think) as well as closing 8 schools and laying off 400 people including nurses, counselors, and teachers.

Some people are bitching about the Apple laptop program (every high schooler gets one), saying it is unnecessary and a luxury....but with subsidies and grants that program is less than 1% of the budget, and the recorded outcomes from similar programs are amazing enough to give anyone pause. That shit seems to work. So they are stupid people. Others feel like the teachers and admins want to sneak a pay raise or whatever in there and are using scare tactics to get it.

The problem is we all feel a little under the gun. And some want to refuse to concede on those terms. Me included. I hate feeling like my only option is to vote yes and hope I wasn't hoodwinked.

I would be quite surprised if voters in Alabama would vote to shut down school sports.

But maybe my impression is exaggerated from depictions of Texas. But if it also means closing down football programs, I'm guessing you don't have much to worry about.

It's time to get bad-mouthed at work. Armed with faux concern for "the customer", critics righteously, but gleefully, condemn. They'll spread the word that I fucked up, consolidating collective anger upon a single satisfying focal point. That's right, me! They won't ask me because it's easier to assume. It's not that simple; it wasn't me... Sure I pulled levers, exposing a hole. I pulled levers because it was demanded of me, even after I said they aren't ready to pull. People love to point fingers and fuel their prejudices. We all do it - like passing a wayward car on the road, we can't help but project the worst qualities onto the driver. Ugh, yes.

Here's the thing that gets me: I have gotten a number of different calls from unknown numbers telling me that someone I know is sick, injured, or dead. So I am never ever comfortable not picking up a call unless it's clearly shown as a marketing or political call, which they almost never are.

Literally just got a poll call right now while I was typing that, from my brother's area code.

This is maybe more befuddling than enraging, but I am sort of mad about it, so I'll put it here.

So there's this local rape crisis group that does door to door and phone soliciting around here. We've given them moneys before and all, so we get them more often. But here's the thing: They have some extremely skeevy tactics.

So last night, what with my foot hurting and the dogs still being a little reactive to the doorbell and all, I decided to forgo answering the door for trick or treaters. I got a lawn chair, completely blocked the path to the front door with it, and put out a bowl of candy with a sign to take some.

Every trick or treater that came got the message that I couldn't come to the door. The rape crisis solicitor did not. He walks around the barrier (he had to have walked into a rosebush or through the thyme), comes up, rings the doorbell, the dogs start barking, I hobble over to answer it, holding Buddy back because he's fixing to run, and tell the guy No, go away. He keeps talking, like he's not going to leave, I say, "No, not now. Stop it. Have a nice night, and take some candy on your way. Bye!" and just close the door in his face.

One time previously, someone else came to the door and I said no, we couldn't do it, and then she's like NOOO YOU HAVE TO GIVE US MONEY and starts telling me she'll come in and wait while I look through the couch cushions to find money to donate. Seriously. Really.

They also keep calling and bothering Matlock because he's given them money before, and he actually has to just hang up on them because they never let him do it politely.

And here is the thing: This is a rape crisis center, and they solicit for funds by ignoring people's boundaries, being super-aggressively persistent, and refusing to take no for an answer. For me, that's just annoying, but those are exactly the sort of things that sexual predators do all the time. I can only imagine that someone who is traumatized from something like that could get pretty triggered by having someone refusing to back off and even trying to get inside their house after they've told them to leave.

They're still a good and necessary organization, so I'm not like against them, but holy shit, is that fucked up. I emailed them and told them all that, and I hope they listen, but I guess I wanted to complain some more.

So I went down to vote, and I had decided that I would use my UTILITY BILL as my identification AS IS MY RIGHT according to Colorado voter law and all. So I get up to the first table, where they check you off and verify you, where they have a sign telling you to hand over your photo ID, and I'm like, "I'm gonna use my utility bill!" and they're like, "Don't you have a license? DID YOU WALK HERE?" and I'm like, "I just want to use my utility bill because I am allowed to, and I just wanted to make sure it works the way it's supposed to," and they're all whining and shit, and I'm like, "NOEP I AM NOT GIVING YOU A PHOTO ID I DON'T HAVE TO YOU CAN'T MAKE ME" so they're all like UGH and they write my account number down on the mandatory field of the form for Driver's license or state ID number. Then, as I'm leaving, they're like, "YOU SHOULD GET YOUR LICENSE REINSTATED," and I'm like, "Yeah, whatevs."

I should note that I was actually a lot more apologetic than in this account, all like, "No, I'm sorry ladies, I'm not trying to give you crap. I just want to make sure the system is working for people who need it" and shit.

So I get up to the second table where they give you the ballot, and the one lady is like, "What's this number?" and I told her, and she was all like, "Oh, thank you for doing this before election day. Now I'll know what that looks like," and then I voted, and somebody had accidentally left Republican voter guides in the voting booths, so I brought them up and made the guy throw them away.

TWO COMPLAINS IN A DAY. I WIN.
