Well, we've warmed up to 0 f so far today.

With a high of -10, and a low of -18, Omaha is probably not happy at the moment.

By Wednesday the high will get up to 19, before it gets really cold.

We had a low of -11/-12C yesterday, and had exactly one pipe freeze - the hot water pipe under the kitchen sink. It took me almost 12 hours to figure out why. There is a vent of unknown use directly under the kitchen sink, and it was stuck open. I closed and covered the vent and with the application of an outdoor heater by the kitchen wall, it unfroze in about an hour.

Nope, we are at a very comfortable -7°C / 20°F in the south of Finland at the moment.

Which reminds me: supporters of the "Fahrenheit" scale sometimes say it's easier to understand, because 0°F is really cold outside while 100°F is really hot outside.

The Celsius / Centigrade scale is easy too: 0°C is quite comfortable for a Finn, outside, 100°C is quite comfortable for a Finn, in the sauna.

What's the snow like in y'all's parts of the woods? Here the snowploughs come out pretty quickly after heavier falls ... but the banks of snow beside the paths are getting more solid, and the mountains of snow at the corners of larger areas are now above the level of the street signs.

We're out on the plains. The snow just flies along in the wind until something gets it its way. The road is relatively clear but the leeward side of the buildings and the RV are in a 3-4 foot drift. I KNEW we should have headed South last week. We could be stuck here 'til April, now.

It's bothering me we have not heard anything. Sunday it was 36 degrees below normal there. The daily high was 41 degrees below normal

It got so cold, so fast here our lake froze over in a day, so while we only have an inch or two of "snow" it all stuck and it's solid as rock. It's 8F now, with an expected high of 11F today.

I arrived at the building fully dressed for -22°C (-8°F) in boots, thermals, winter coat, scarf, hat, and gloves and entered the stairwell via the outside door at the same time as, from the basement door, a man dressed only in a towel and flipflops.

TIL that the world outside of Sweden used to call Celsius 'centigrade' (which fits phonetically with that whole metric thing) but then it got changed to Celsius to honor some Swedish scientist with that surname. What a topsy-turvy world.

Mr Celsius did invent the whole zero and one hundred for boiling and freezing points of water* thing - although he wanted to have it the opposite way round, with 100 for freezing and 0 for boiling!

Celsius himself said that the scale should be called 'centigrade', which is Latin for one hundred steps, but after he died, other scientists reversed his scale (so that an increasing temperature actually resulted in a rising number!) and started using his name to refer to it. That gradually spread across the English-speaking world, though we were still calling it centigrade until fairly recently** in the UK.

* pure water at standard atmospheric pressure. Actually, the modern accepted values are 99.97 °C for boiling and −0.0001 °C for freezing.

** The BBC officially swapped in February, 1985.
