This is not a winter, it is a nightmare of indecisiveness.
The Northerners have been laughing at us for our weather problems, but they don't get the issue, because for them it has been solidly below freezing as it should be also here this time of year.
It isn't the cold or even the amount of snow, it's the consistency. First we get a lot of snow. Like a 3-day-blizzard kind of snow. Then it partially melts, so it's all slushy. Then the temperature plummets to -15 C and we have spiky ice. Then it suddenly warms again and we get rain. Which turns into snow. Lots of it. Snow already piled high, but it's still snowing. Fine. Then clear days melt the surface level to more slush and then, yes, another dramatic freeze. Rinse and repeat, for months now. It hurts to walk, the ice is stabbing me through my boots. Broke one pair of boots already, just ripped up. The snow removal people can't keep up as by the time they get to anywhere but the most central and critical areas it is either slush or frozen solid. Or still coming. Twisted ankles from uneven ice in many places, and elsewhere ice-rink smooth conditions mock us where the liberally distributed gravel has just melted through the water before it refreezes. The "potholes" in the packed ice and snow are shockingly deep is many places and the ruts in the road essentially meaning the cars are on tracks. Not to mention the actual really nasty potholes which the constantly freezing and thawing has led to.

We've had a wonderful week of above 70°F/21°C days with lots of sunshine.

Now that's more like the South I know and love. (Just don't talk to me about the politics and the religion.)

Today was warm and mostly sunny with a bit of clouds and breeze in parts, so Mabel and I and several young people went to the flea/farmer's market to walk around and get some pre-season fruits and such. It was great. I found a couple things I'd been actively looking for, we both got plenty of fruit and I accidentally ended up with 60 pounds of dry pinto beans. (Whatever. They keep.) So it was a good day.

And as Mabel and I were driving back, we noticed that the foothills were on fire.

Turns out it's right by NCAR, and they've evacuated big chunks of Boulder and Eldorado Springs. We're not near the evacuation zone, so I'm not worried about that, but this one is so close to the last fire. And it's barely spring.

The sneaky sun make it look nice and warm outside but it was only around 32 and really windy. A good day to be out and about if you were dressed for it. Which I wasn't.

I thought I was beating the sneakiness of the sun by wearing a fleece when I went to the shops yesterday - but really it was pretty warm, except when the breeze gusted. Lots of people in T-shirts.

One day, the wind blows from the North, the next day it blows from the West, then the next, the South. Some days, from the East.

It's safe to say that it just blows, around here.

...and some days, the wind turns so you get a big whiff of Greeley (i.e., manure) in the Denver metro area, and temperature drops 19F in 3 minutes.

I finally transitioned the thermostat from Spring to Summer settings. It’s 23C and sunny, and didn’t get cold last night, so the house stayed warm.
