Okay, ladies. Here you have "Men" totally explained in simple words for you. The number two answer given for what "men" would do for sex is kill. It doesn't say who or what would be the target for death, of course not, this is a family show. Sure, the question itself seems innocent enough and ... well, only one answer is humorous to me (beg). But really there is no end to what's disturbing about this promotional clip for a family show, especially Steve Harvey's celebratory exclamations about killing and lying and dying for sex. It's shitty things like this that make me rethink wanting to be human.

That is a distortion. The idea is not to thwart the bellicose ambitions of women, but to maintain unit cohesion and keep them out of harm's way. That the latter accomplishes the former is a side effect.

You can just churn that shit out reliably, and your audience will always reward you simply because they recognize the stereotype.

I would guess that the frequently-claimed notion that men need regular sex and that they'll die -- or at least go out and start raping random women -- if they don't get it is deliberately promoted by a number of men.


Nonetheless, I know for a fact that it's entirely possible for a man to go without sex for years at a time without dying, becoming mentally unbalanced, or committing rape.

There is a germ of truth in that, I think, but he's mostly got it backwards. Girls tend just to grow the fuck up and become women as a consequence of life, whereas men have a much better chance of never growing up at all. Most men need to be able to point to a specific accomplishment or series of events in order to demonstrate to themselves that they have, indeed, grown up. Many of them can't do it, ever, and among those who can, a great number of those end up pointing at some pathetically lame stuff.

When I was writing the movie Mean Girls--which hopefully is playing on TBS right now!-- I went to a workshop taught by Rosalind Wiseman as part of my research. Rosalind wrote the nonfiction book Queen Bees and Wannabees that Mean Girls was based on, and she conducted a lot of self-esteem and bullying workshops with women and girls around the country. She did this particular exercise in a hotel ballroom in Washington, DC, with about two hundred grown women, asking them to write down the moment they first "knew they were a woman." Meaning, "When did you first feel like a grown woman and not a girl?" We wrote down our answers and shared them, first in pairs, then in larger groups. The group of women was racially and economically diverse, but the answers had a very similar theme.

Almost everyone first realized they were becoming a grown woman when some dude did something nasty to them. "I was walking home from ballet and a guy in a car yelled, 'Lick me!' " "I was babysitting my younger cousins when a guy drove by and yelled, 'Nice ass.' " There were pretty much zero examples like "I first knew I was a woman when my mother and father took me out to dinner to celebrate my success on the debate team." It was mostly men yelling shit from cars. Are they a patrol sent out to let girls know they've crossed into puberty? If so, it's working.

I think the key to understanding that mindset is in understanding that people like that think of women as disposable, single-use objects.

Basically, the female species exists solely as receptacles for sex, and once they've been used, they lose their value as a commodity.

And that's not just me being hyperbolic. One of the most common activities used in abstinence programs is to pass something around--usually a candy bar or something--and have everyone in the room handle it, then ask the kids if they'd want to eat or otherwise use it afterward. I've seen like five different variations on that, and it's not like I go out looking for that stuff. There was some dude going around to our local schools who upped the game by passing around a glass of water and having everyone spit in it.

Those aren't always explicitly directed to girls only (usually they are, but some of the abstinence 'educators' who go around to schools have modified the lessons to be superficially inclusive), but whether you specify or not, boys are not internalizing that message because it doesn't fit their narrative.

And the people who do that seriously don't seem to grasp what is wrong with that analogy, either. Those basic tenets--women are objects that are defined by their interactions with men--are very ingrained.

And just as a side note, one pretty frustrating thing about being a lady is that, the stupider a man is, the more likely he is to assume he's smarter than you by default. So really, really stupid men regularly talk to you as though you were a toddler or a dog or something. As such, if you try to explain to them what is awful about their basic premise, they assume you don't understand and just re-explain it. When that water guy was in the local media, he and his supporters kept explaining to ladies that it is OK and that the students didn't actually have to drink the water. Seriously.

There's a certain logic to that, I suppose. It takes a certain amount of intelligence to be capable of understanding that not everyone else thinks as you do. Couple stupidity with a sense of superiority, and it's not surprising that such a person would be all but incapable of comprehending that others could be as smart as -- or smarter than -- oneself.

I mean, if you've been taught all your life that you're genuinely superior (because you're male, and/or white, and/or heterosexual, and/or Christian, etc., etc.) and you've incorporated that into your mindset, then it pretty-much follows naturally that anyone who fails to recognize that "obvious" fact must be lacking in intelligence him-/herself.


And sadly, as has been demonstrated pretty thoroughly, there tends to be an inverse correlation between how competent a person actually is and how competent (s)he thinks (s)he is. So it wouldn't be surprising to learn that, in general, the dumber you are, the more likely you are to mis-judge the capabilities of others -- and the less likely you are to recognize that your judgment might be mistaken.

As much as I love the Arthurian mythos and whatnot, you see that sort of attitude all the time in classical literature. The "fair maiden" must protect her "virtue" at all costs, and if she is "plucked" (even if -- perhaps especially if -- it's through rape), then she is "ruined forever." (That is, no "respectable" man will ever have her, and so she's doomed to be forever alone and reviled.)

And it's not just in classical literature. It still seems to be a remarkably common attitude that a woman must guard her "virtue" and that she is somehow "tarnished" if she doesn't.

It's part of the whole "Madonna-Whore complex," I suppose. Supposedly, men want to date a "Whore" (who's likely to consent to sex), but want to marry a "pure" and virginal "Madonna."

Yeah, I think the more privilege you rack up in your life, the less likely it is that you really think of other people as equals, or in some ways, even as really people. So you be walking around being a straight white guy, you can very easily never really have to put yourself in anyone else's shoes or contemplate what the world is like for anyone who isn't like you.

And if you never notice or acknowledge that privilege, it can make you pretty dumb.
