Well, although seebs incorrectly referred to NaCl as "an atom"* (as The Lone Ranger explained), referring to a chlorine atom can't possibly be referring to dichlorine, which is a molecule composed of two chlorine atoms.
*if you have one Na atom and one Cl atom together, it's not technically a molecule either, since it's an ionic compound, and as such doesn't necessarily have distinct little Na-Cl pairs in the way that say, carbon dioxide gas is composed of distinct CO 2 molecules, which are held together by covalent bonds
Quote:
The mistake is confusing a sodium ion Na+ with metallic sodium, Na2
|
There is no such thing as Na 2.
For someone deriding others for supposedly lacking basic chemistry knowledge, you ought to know that atoms of metals don't typically form covalent bonds with each other. There is nothing that is commonly referred to as "Na 2", there's just Na.
Quote:
We can listen to people insist that NaCl is the same as Na2 and Cl2 until the end of time.

Nobody has insisted that (even ignoring the fact that nobody but you would refer to Na 2 in the first place).

An ionic compound?
...Are you sure it's not a doric compound?
It certainly doesn't look complex enough to be a corinthian compound.

Re: This Just in! Vaccines STILL Do Not Cause Autism
FX, you are sort of making my point here. "Chlorine" is in fact highly toxic and works as an antiseptic. However, *other materials may be made from it*. Those materials may have wildly different properties.
Do you know why "salt in the wound" hurts? Because salt is lethal. Except that you need some of it to survive.
If you want to argue that a particular mercury compound is harmful, you have to argue it based on the actual properties of that particular material, not off the general traits of elemental mercury.

Re: This Just in! Vaccines STILL Do Not Cause Autism
I don't have to argue anything. The toxicity of every mercury compound, as well as the compounds they are metabolized to in living organisms, is already common knowledge.
Speaking of, my rat friend clued me to some animal studies on thimerosal. He also thinks he might have the swine flu.
The good news, is that at the moment, the current version isn't very deadly. The bad news, they just reported the shortages of vaccines is going to last until at least December.
