LOL. I remember watching one of their technical evangelists give this long-winded 20 minute wind-up speech about how this application was going to revolutionize the internet, and how you've never seen anything like it before, the greatest productivity booster since the invention of the spreadsheet, etc. etc.
Google should focus less on marketing hype and focus more on getting the user experience right.
|
I actually think gWave would have done fine if they had integrated it with email. Otherwise it was useless unless everyone you know was using it.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
Okay, I found a Google thing that I absolutely love, Google Sites. Easy to use, easy to share, collaborative and versatile. I wouldn't use it for a professional or business site, but for personal and temporary stuff like event planning, or trip planning (my nemesis so far), or shared projects I think it will work awesome. Not sure why I never looked at it before
I just created one regarding relocation to Shreveport for my SIL, and am really pleased with the results.

Um... oops?
Especially funny to me because I have a blog on blogspot and it's the only google thing I use that makes me log in every time I want to use it (won't remember me).

Re: WTF happened to Google?
Admittedly, not a massive fan of wave, or their new updates to the search engine (google images and the 'instant search' feature and website preview) are pretty balls. But, I couldn't live without Google Scholar, for now.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
As someone who searches Google all day professionally, the instant search causes many more problems and time lags than it ever avoids. I wish they'd get rid of it or rethink it. I'm tired of blank results pages and the search bar still showing through the third hit making it impossible to click on it.

Indeed you can. While logged into your Google account, Settings > Search Settings > Google Instant

Settings -> Google Instant -> Do not use Google Instant
If you're not signed in, it stores your settings in a cookie, so the you'll have to reset it the next time liv tells you to clear cookies.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
I don't sign in because I don't need Google tracking the searches I do for patrons to me. And I have Firefox set to remove my cookies on close. I wouldn't have a problem if the damn thing worked right.

If you wanted to just save the one cookie from Google, this might help. It lets you mark certain cookies as protected, so they aren't deleted when you close your browser. You need to disable the normal delete on exit and use their delete on startup, though. I think the cookie you want is called PREF.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
Why is this "Google is the worst" thread all small and old? Google is the worst!
Official Google Blog: Google+ Pages: connect with all the things you care about
They disabled the boolean + and replaced it with OH YEAH NO I REALLY MEAN IT "quotes," which are a gigantic pain in the ass and stupid and do not work; and it turns out that it's all so they could roll out this great new feature to solve the giant problem we all have of where you can't find the corporate branding site for Pepsi.
Oh god, what a great solution for such a terrible problem.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
My G@@gle hating continues unabated. However I've shifted from ranting about it to desiring strongly to use black magic to torment the people responsible.
My current berserk button with the search engine is the asinine, "returning results for (pop culture garbage I didn't search for), search instead for (link to what I actually typed into the search box.)"

I wonder if they have gone all Microsoft and are releasing new products and upgrades before they're ready for Primetime.

Well, it's hard to compare them to Microsoft when the price is FREE.
But not all there non-core products are disappointing. Checkout Sketchup, it has got to be, hands down, the easiest 3D drawing tool I've ever used.

For a super bonus, my work email address just update from Microsoft Inbox to Gmail, just in time for it to suck. Obsolescence in 1: 2: 3:...
We've really got to start paying our IT people better so they don't suck or leave immediately.

I have not clicked the "Switch to the new look" button. I hope they don't force it on me.

I tried it out - it doesn't look so bad to me. There is a 'temporarily revert to the old look' option if you click on the options thing (the bit that looks like a cogwheel) so you're not locked into the new look (yet) if you're curious to see what it looks like.

I don't know what you maroons are going on about. My gMail looks just fine.
But they're so damn proud of their sickly hospital everything must be borderless white because of germs or something they're bugging me to SWITCH TO THE NEW LOOK with an unobtrusive pip at the bottom of my screen when I first login. And I'm all NO WAY GET THAT LITTLE PIP OUT OF MY VIEWSIGHT I DON'T WANT NEW I LIKE MY OLDE.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
FWIW, a lot of the Gmail themes mask the new look pretty effectively. Pretty much the only difference I notice is that the buttons at the top are shaped differently now.
