Statue of Amenhotep III unearthed at Luxor.
It appears to be in remarkably good condition.

Re: History geekodrome
I caught the very tail end of an interview with Craig Childs concerning his recent book Finders Keepers: A Tale of Archaeological Plunder and Obsession. It was p interesting and he even mentioned about one "amateur" archaeologist who was fined millions of dollars for incidentally destroying ~10,000 years worth of finds. Of course, all I could think of was "It belongs in a museum!"

Neither had the person who posted it, that being the joke. Said person saw it here, reposted it and that's where I saw it. Don't worry, it's not funny to me now either.

Re: History geekodrome
Quote:
The Picts have long been regarded as enigmatic savages who fought off Rome's legions before mysteriously disappearing from history, wild tribesmen who refused to sacrifice their freedom in exchange for the benefits of civilisation. But far from the primitive warriors of popular imagination, they actually built a highly sophisticated culture in northern Scotland in the latter half of the first millennium AD, which surpassed their Anglo-Saxon rivals in many respects.
A study of one the most important archaeological discoveries in Scotland for 30 years, a Pictish monastery at Portmahomack on the Tarbat peninsula in Easter Ross, has found that they were capable of great art, learning and the use of complex architectural principles.
...
And, in a discovery described as "astonishing, mind-blowing" by architectural historians, it appears that the people who built the monastery did so using the proportions of "the Golden Section", or "Divine Proportion" as it became known during the Renaissance hundreds of years later. This ratio of dimensions, 1.618 to one, appears in nature, such as in the spiral of seashells, and the faces of people considered beautiful, such as Marilyn Monroe. It can be seen in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the Alhambra palace of Granada in Spain, the Acropolis in Athens and the Egyptian Pyramids, but was thought to have been too advanced for the Picts.

Re: History geekodrome
I think the Picts are one of those people about whom most knowledge comes from their enemies, seen from the other side of a battlefield or a wall.

Re: History geekodrome
I just saw this on the BBC site:
Quote:
A group of 70 or so "books", each with between five and 15 lead leaves bound by lead rings, was apparently discovered in a remote arid valley in northern Jordan somewhere between 2005 and 2007.
A flash flood had exposed two niches inside the cave, one of them marked with a menorah or candlestick, the ancient Jewish religious symbol.
A Jordanian Bedouin opened these plugs, and what he found inside might constitute extremely rare relics of early Christianity.
|
BBC News - Jordan battles to regain 'priceless' Christian relics
Apparently another Bedouin smuggled them into Israel and claims they've been in his family for 100 years. Jordan wants them back. Well, good luck with that and forget it.
Quote:
The director of the Jordan's Department of Antiquities, Ziad al-Saad, says the books might have been made by followers of Jesus in the few decades immediately following his crucifixion.
"They will really match, and perhaps be more significant than, the Dead Sea Scrolls," says Mr Saad.
"Maybe it will lead to further interpretation and authenticity checks of the material, but the initial information is very encouraging, and it seems that we are looking at a very important and significant discovery, maybe the most important discovery in the history of archaeology."

Re: History geekodrome
Today I learned that the creator of Ironic Sans has a second blog (and has for about a year ... I'm a little slow on the uptake) wherein he blogs about New York Times articles from 100 years before:
Sunday Magazine | The most interesting articles from 100 years ago this weekend
Quote:
Reading articles 100 years after they were published means that the topics are often surprisingly relevant. For example, when today's media was talking about the 2010 census, I posted a Times Magazine article about how the 1910 census was counted using punch cards and an electric tabulating machine for the first time. When the New York Public Library unveiled its centennial restoration of the main branch, I posted the old magazine's preview of the brand-new building.
