Neither WAR nor WoW
Instead, I picked up City of Heroes/City of Villains as my first MMORPG. I understand it's better for casual gamers like myself.
Any players before I select a server to join?

Re: Neither WAR nor WoW
Don't know much about it. I have a friend who plays, but the key reasons he gave for playing it (no equipment to grind, for instance) made me think I'd hate it, and there's no Mac port.

Haven't played it. I've heard the most fun is the character customisation.
ETA: not by way of disparagement; I mean, people say that part is really fun

It's great for casual players and mostly easy to solo, too. I like it a lot.

Yah, I think the solo aspect is what I'm enjoying most so far. I always get the feel from WoW that if you didn't start when the game was first released, you'd be hopelessly left behind.

Re: Neither WAR nor WoW
I am on liberty I think. It is the top one, I have a bunch of toons but I haven't played in a couple of years, I am just starting back.
beyelzu and beyelzu 2 and beyelzu baratheon. beyelzu2 was orginally named effin with yo head, but I had to change the name.
anyway, like I said I also have some lower level toons. look me up.

As soon as I figure out how to look you up, I will.
I think I'm on "Triumph", it was at the top of the list, probably pretty sparsely populated.

Re: Neither WAR nor WoW
As we are on different servers, can we interact? Worse comes to worst, I can recreate my characters on your server (after you confirm it's Liberty). I only just got the game this weekend, so it's no big deal to start over.
I've got three heroes and three villains. All based on the Chinese Zodiac:
Heroes:
- Yi Guo (Iron Dog)
- Hou Ma (Fire Horse)
- Hu Gong Zhu (Frozen Boar)
Villains
- Kuai Lau Shu (Cunning Rat)
- Hei Se (Dark Snake)
- Tian Shang Lung (Celestial Dragon)

Re: Neither WAR nor WoW
we can't interact on different servers, if you feel like making them again it would be cool. I will let you know what server I am on for sure once they come back up. It's cool because I basically have to relearn how to play the game and you are a first time player. I should have some cash laying about on one of my toons as well.

You can always come lag with me on Virtue.
You can interact, um, "verbally" with the cross server global chat system but not "physically."

What does that entail? What do you mean by "lag with me"?

Re: Neither WAR nor WoW
Virtue is the second highest populated server (Freedom is #1). During peak hours there can be a lot of people hanging around.
Virtue is also considered the Unofficial Role Play server. Not everyone on Virtue does but there's a higher concentration of those who do.
No matter what, if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer - or send you to where the answer might be. (That goes for you too, bey.)

Re: Neither WAR nor WoW
Oooooh....role playing. I'm much more intrigued by that than simply running around smashing things and people.
And since you're willing to answer questions:
- What are peak hours?
- Is there any reason to establish characters in more than one server?
- What's PvP like? I'd imagine that newbies get thrashed pretty easily there.
- Do you play the missions or just run around the open world?
- Have you tried the Halloween event this year? Thoughts?
- Are missions randomized? I've done one mission for Hero and Villain. I have other characters that I'd like to level-up, will they be assigned the same missions?

I consider peak hours to be between 6pm Eastern until midnight Pacific. At the server screen it's usually indicated by Freedom and Virtue being "yellow" or medium populated.

Unlike, say WoW or DAoC there is no difference between servers, generally speaking. (No PvP only, no Co-op only etc servers.) I hesitate at saying "no" only because some people might find not being bothered (much) on low pop servers a good break.

I don't PvP much so I can't answer this question with much depth. There are five ways to PvP in City of Heroes/Villains. There are four level capped zones that are PvP enabled:
Bloody Bay - available at level 15, all players set to level 25
Siren's Call - available at level 20, all players set to level 30
Warburg - available at level 30, all players set to level 38
Recluse's Victory - available at level 40, all players set to level 50
And the Arena.
Quote:
- Do you play the missions or just run around the open world?

I run the missions. Way back in the day it was more profitable to street sweep (xp:influence). They added mission complete bonuses that changed the balance. But I've always enjoyed the story arcs that come from contacts.

This year's ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE is quite the event. If you haven't yet done it you should. My only suggestion is to be alone when it happens, at least the first time.

Not really. Depending on your origin you'll have a slightly different initial experience. After that the contacts you're introduced to aren't going to differ too much character to character.

Re: Neither WAR nor WoW
Thanks for your help, it's all I can do to stay at work and not run home to play.
This is exactly why I feared joining an MMORPG

Yeah, while exploring as a Villain, I knocked on a door only to have Zombies and Witches pour out and attack me. It was great fun. Especially watching multiple villains dealing with scores of Zombies and Undead in some kind of outbreak.
Later when I played around as a Hero, I walked right into a massive brawl between heroes and a horde of Undead. Got my ass handed to me pretty quickly.

Re: Neither WAR nor WoW
"Traditional" Trick or Treating is old hat to us veterans. We are doing it for badges (which ultimately mean nothing) or for costume salvage for our newer characters. In a big enough group it's still a good deal of fun.
Last year's event is carried over to this year as well. It involves fighting back GM (giant monster) spawns of pumpkin headed evil, and after enough of those Jack in Irons himself should show up, as well as an entourage of various spiritual nasties.

Re: Neither WAR nor WoW
Well, I've created a full Zodiac-worth of characters on "Virtue". Spent the night doing that, so didn't actually play.
Probably will play tonight.
I decided not to move my characters from "Triumph", I'm gonna keep them there. Also, wherever bey resides, I'll probably create a new set of characters there, as well.
And yes, they will all be based on the Chinese Zodiac. Figure the servers are simply parallel universes.
I'm inordinately proud of the designs for my characters, is there any way I can get a "pic" of them from the game to share or do I have to resort to screenshots?
I'm not a number-cruncher or rules-lawyer, so I doubt I'll be very good at min-maxing. I'm hopeful that this won't be detrimental to my experience. I'm thinking it will probably only hurt me in PvP, which I'm not even close to ready for.
Ooooh and after creating a Villain, I knocked on a door and got a "Treat" for a change. A temporary power (2-weeks) I can use to change into a Council Guard or something. Pretty appropriate since the Villain was The Cunning Rat, a ninja.
ETA: Is there a way of rotating the camera during the game so that I can see my Character from the front?

Re: Neither WAR nor WoW
The official forums can actually be useful for information. The best place to look are the specific archetype fora and in each there is a sticky for guides. (Login will be the same username/password combo as the game.)
At present the only way to get a picture of your character is to be in game and (by default) hit Print Screen. This sends a .jpg to your City of Heroes/Screenshots folder.
An upcoming feature will be savable/loadable costumes. And in the next month or so (speculative) they will be unleashing Issue 13: Power and Responsibility, with new things to see and do and so forth.

Re: Neither WAR nor WoW
I'll just create new characters on Liberty. All my guys are at Level 1, so no big deal.
I've no problem with playing on different servers, I'm not yet dedicated to any one character. As a matter of fact, I'm obsessed with creating new characters. The character generation system is tons of fun.
So, how do I find you on Liberty?

Is CoX a monthly fee game? I'm already over-stretched, but that sounds like it would be entertaining for a little while at least. And I could totally grief wei yau.
