I just self-banned at IIDB two nights ago, so I guess I understand it.

I sometimes find discussions there really interesting, so I go there fairly often. However, as an opinionated person I almost invariably end up getting in an argument with someone, and a fairly high percentage of the threads I post in end up getting locked. So, being someone who hates moderation and tries hard to obey the rules, I get annoyed.

Hence the easiest way for me to still derive whatever benefit I can get from going there at all while ensuring that I won't get into yet another boring argument that results in yet another annoying act of moderation, was to request to be banned so I can't post even if I want to.

So yeah, definitely self-parental control for me.

As for self-bannination, I've done it here, not quite for the fuck-you reason, for that I was able to self-restrain myself from posting for a while, but for other reasons that I needed to stay away but found it difficult to do, I don't have a lot of self-discipline. It worked too, for about a week. After I decided I could still participate under the conditions that were being imposed on me, I begged vm and liv to let me back in. For the most part since then, I've been able to restrict myself on what I say that might offend a certain party that will remain unnamed.

That's why I brought that particular policy discussion here. I didn't think it really warranted being held in a place that most people frequent.
