Lazy journalism from The Grauniad to dub it “a gamble”. True, it’s mostly the case that a PM who calls an election earlier than expected is banking on things going against them in the the longer term. But what’s the gamble here—that there’s not some amazing event going to occur between July and next January capable of restoring Tory fortunes at the ballot box?

It's Labour's turn now. Many of those who vowed, "I'll never vote Labour again, as long as I live", back in 2007, have either forgotten their vow, or died.

And it's likely that in another eight years or so, the people who are currently saying the same about the present Tory government will do the same.

People vote out the current crappy government in the hope that the current opposition, "can't be any worse." In a two party dominated system, this leads to the alternation of the governing party, on average every two electoral terms.

Some voters are naive enough to believe that the current opposition will actually do a great job in government, but most older voters are jaded enough to not really expect much.

Quite. It's not a gamble, it's a tacit admission that things aren't going to get better between July and next January.

That was my exact thought as well. Like, I don't get all the intricate calculations of why British elections are called early and the calendar mysteries, but it seems like there are only a few reasons to call one early: (1) bring your own party into line; (2) take advantage of a weak opposition; or (3) minimize the damage because things are only going to get worse for you before the scheduled election.

Let's not pretend he can bring the party into line, and with Labour running 20 points ahead...

I do think there's a reasonable case that MP compensation - both during and after the role - is insufficient to attract people we'd actually want to do the job. Especially given the loss of privacy and real risks to personal and family safety becoming an MP can entail.

There's a reason so many of them come from inherited wealth or are 'career' politicians.

While I agree in principle I think my objection is the:

Quote:
Sunderland agreed that politics also plays a role in trying to get a job outside the Commons, saying he has been rejected for roles because he was an ex-Conservative MP.

“I have been turned down for jobs over the last three months, jobs which I was perfect for”, he said.
That's too god damned bad.

And:

Quote:
“In my case, 26 years in the Army, four-and-a-half years as an MP, I'd never been unemployed. I've never had a CV. I never was on LinkedIn, this is stuff we have to do from complete scratch.
You're a career Army man, so yeah, I suppose you never needed a CV.

But yes, just like any other job an unemployment benefit is in order.
