New kitten has arrived. So far she’s been a bit timid and had a bad experience with the puppies, but has been warming up to the family.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
We have a bunch of barn cats.
There's an old Tom that roams about town. He porked a little Calico that hangs around the barn, and she dropped about five females.
Those all reached age, and he porked them.
We're trying to round them up get them to a vet for fixing, but all the vets within 100 miles, or so are cattle vets, instead of cat vets.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
We've scheduled PuppetteF's final vet visit for next Wednesday. She's having a lot of mobility problems and we don't want to wait until she's unable to walk. It's uncomfortable for her to squat to pee and poop. We're also worried about her falling and hurting herself such that we have to take her in on an emergency basis, which would be just awful for everyone.
She still has a champion appetite. So she'll have a big juicy hamburger for breakfast, and the vet will come to the house in the afternoon.
She came to us when my husband was still practicing at a vet clinic, and her family brought her in to be euthanized. She has Addison's disease and was in Addisonian crisis. For the first and so far only time in his career, he got them to agree to surrender her to him instead. The first thing I heard about her was "this dog is a total lemon." We never thought she would be with us this long - over 7 years (where did that time go??). But she made it through the Addisonian crisis and finally made it to her real home and her real dads.
We're not sure how old she is; the low estimate is 13. She's a tough old stinky hound dog with a ton of medical problems. She sheds by the pound. Her pill calendar and poop schedule run our life. We've spent thousands of dollars on her. We have to clean and powder her goopy vulva a couple times a week. And we'll miss her very much.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
That is done. Very peaceful and (I hope and believe) easy for her. I am mildly shattered but will be fine. She had a good day. Slept in, a big breakfast, and the whole family went on a short walkie with lots of smells and 2 big poops. She came in and settled in for a nap and had some good dreams. I like when old dogs are young in their dreams, and go running in their sleep after they can no longer run while awake. Then it was time for a hamburger and the big nap. We could all wish for such a death.

But, of course, we can't do something similar for the humans we care about because "sanctity of life" and all. Where the "sanctity" comes in is something of a mystery. Is it the sucking of air? Metabolizing food? Shitting and/or pissing? Or is it the grand Galtian precept that any living human who has a penny or two left for the healthcare and/or long-term care industry to pilfer must be kept alive - misery notwithstanding - until the theft is utterly complete?
In any event, I am very sorry for you guys but also glad that, thanks to you, PuppetteF had such a great run during her final 7+ years.

A lovely sentence. Reminds me of the description of the old man’s dreams in The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway.
My condolences for your loss.

PuppetF was a good dog. The best. Whatever history brought her to your door is forgotten. She lived her best life with you. I'm happy she lived what years she had with you there. I'm always sad to say goodbye. Our best furry friends are the only reason I want to believe there's something more beyond the mortal coil.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
I got a new lens, a 150mm Macro manual focus. I've had it on my radar for a few years, but I'm pleasure spending on things while I still have some inheritance money.
I get it all unpacked and ready, and the dogs are right there, so the first thing I get a decent picture of is Cookie Crisp:
Cinnamon's picture isn't focused correctly, so he's not featured here.
I don't know where to put this other picture I like, so it goes here too.

Very likely, other people identified it as fuscha.
The only problem with that much floof is he needs his butt shaved regularly, or else his poop gets caught it his fur. Otherwise, he's a very pretty dog.

Finally got a halfway decent picture of Cinnamon, he makes using a manual focus hard.

New kitten, half sister to the slightly older kitten. We may be saddling her with the name Ahsoka Kitano, but probably just Ahsoka:

Ahsoka is very people oriented but a bit more cautious than Calrissian, it doesn't help that Calrissian is stalking her when she's out in the open. We haven't determined if this is OK or bad stalking.

The kittens are getting along fine, Ashoka feels comfortable enough to explore the rest of house, usually with Calrissian. The more distressing thing is how comfortable she feels walking along the railing of the loft. She just fell off, apparently without injury.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Kitten update, Calrissian found a plastic cap and it batting around the bathroom floor while Ashoka is trying to get some action in. It's a surprisingly annoying sound. Both cats are now mostly comfortable wandering around the house, and spent most of the night in our daylight basement the last 2 days. Yesterday morning, this is them watching me take the dogs out in our backyard:

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Haven't any pictures, yet, but the Daughter took in a barn Cat that had dropped her first litter. They have been living in her bathroom for around 6 weeks.
She was hoping to get them all fixed, and turn them loose in the Barn.
I'm not sure how that is going to work, but I pretty much held my tongue.
She got the momma fixed, and planning to keep her, after I advised that momma may have some difficulty going back to the Barn, as the other cats will likely have filled the niche she held in the cat power structure. Since she cannot reproduce, I fear that she will simply be viewed as competition in the local environs.
She plans on taking all but one of the kits to humane society in Denver.
The one male is a solid black little guy, who is quite the adventurer.
The old man in the House has not yet met the new cats. He has heard them, and sniffed under the door to see what is going on in there.
[IMG] [/IMG]
He's an old guy who SIL adopted many years ago after pulling his nearly frozen little body out of the snow in 2010, and we adopted him when she passed a few years ago. He has been quite comfortable as an only Child.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Oops! We have a pug. His name is Curley and he's 3.5 years old, about the same age as Mookie. My guess is he was named for his tight little piggie tail.
It was one of those a friend of a friend needs to rehome their dog situations, and we were like "okay. oh wait, right this second? okay!"
He's pretty chill so far. Mostly just timid and confused. Mookie is jealous but too much of a good girl to act up, she's just acting all piteous. Gizmo barely cares. She knows she's still number one.
Curley absorbs way more photons than he reflects, so it's hard to get a good photo of him.
