All boards attract crazies - we're spending hours communicating with invisible people, after all. The real question is whether any boards actually attract sane folk.

And I'd say there's definitely a correlation between crazy people on the internet and global temperatures over the last two decades.

Maybe the mercury causes dwarfism?

Can't you just create a thread for the mercury discussion and leave this one for global warming? :thankee: I think a discussion of mercury could be interesting. :yup:

Because "light" tuna is made primarily from Skipjack Tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). Albacore (Thunnus alalunga) feeds higher on the food chain than does Skipjack, and so is far more affected by bioaccumulation. Criminy, this is Ecology 101.

Here I was thinking it must be because mercury is heavy, therefore tuna with less mercury would be lighter than tuna with more mercury.

I used to go fishing with my uncle for bonita. Man those dudes were heavy. Especially after we dropped off our catch at the cannery and then got it back as canned bonita.

In Post #170, I incorectly stated that World Poplulation was increasing at 15% per year, which is higher than what is projected. The projected rate of World Population icrease is 22% over the next 20 years. My time to edit that post has expired.

Al Gore has some population prediction graphs in he Inconvenient Truth movie.

My point was that population is increasing faster than good conservation of the Earth can be provided with today's technology.

I'LL BE JUST FINE, SAYS PLANET

Quote:
The planet Earth has dismissed claims it is in danger from global warming, stressing the worst that could happen is the extinction of the human race.

The Earth spoke out after a series of books, television programmes and environmental campaigns urged people to do everything in their power to 'Save the Planet'...

The planet, based 93 million miles from the Sun, said it was 'sick and tired' of being drawn into arguments about human behaviour.

"Look, I'm just a planet doing its thing, alright? If you want to live on me, that's your business, but I've got important planet stuff to do, okay?"

If that is the case, I have some advice for you to make your research easier:
1) do not bother reading about the science behind global warming, just believe that it is happening
2) only pay attention to writings which offer possible solutions -- solutions which include costs

That is my recommendation because I personally find the solutions more interesting and useful. The science is actually quite boring, in my opinion. If, on the other hand, you enjoy the science, have at it.

Having said that, you may still believe the science is wrong. In which case, it is still to your advantage to understand policy proposals. A few people have posted references for different policies -- read them.

One more piece of advice: Follow the money.
When you look at a policy proposal, find out who stands to profit from it the most. There may be bias in public policy.

Author of the theory that global warming breeds stronger hurricanes recants his view

Noted Hurricane Expert Kerry Emanuel has publicly reversed his stance on the impact of Global Warming on Hurricanes. Saying "The models are telling us something quite different from what nature seems to be telling us," Emanuel has released new research indicating that even in a rapidly warming world, hurricane frequency and intensity will not be substantially affected.

"The results surprised me," says Emanuel, one of the media's most quoted figures on the topic.

The view that global warming has limited impact on hurricane strength has been previously reported in numerous DailyTech articles.

Emanuel, professor of Atmospheric Science at MIT, is the author of numerous books and research papers on climate change. For over twenty years, he has argued that global warming breeds more frequent and stronger storms. In fact, his 1987 paper is often cited as the first appearance of the theory itself.

His 2005 research -- published just one month before Hurricane Katrina struck -- made world headlines, and was heralded as the "final proof" that Global Warming was already having severe impacts on daily lives. Overnight, Emanuel became a media darling. The following year, Time Magazine named him to their "100 People Who Shape Our World" list.

In 2006, Al Gore used an image of a smokestack spawning a hurricane to promote his movie, An Inconvenient Truth.

Emanuel's newest work, co-authored with two other researchers, simulates hurricane conditions nearly 200 years in the future. The research -- the first to mesh global climate models with small-scale high-resolution simulations of individual storms -- found that while storm strength rises slightly in some areas, it falls in others -- and the total number of worldwide storms actually declines slightly.

Emanuel's reversal is certain to reverberate through political circles as well; many politicians and candidates are using the hurricane threat to compel action on climate change.

Al Gore claims that Glbal Warming will cause rainfall will increase, overall, but will become more sporadic. Rainfall is supposed to increase with Global Warming, but droughts add downpours will become more common.

6000 children die each day from disease or poisons in the drinking water. Less consitent water supplies will not be good for reducing deaths from impure water.
