Seems true on the surface especially with the adventure where a chat bot turned into a Nazi:

Cultsmuncher hasn’t improved in the six years since his rebrand, but in the same timeframe AI bots sure have.

This critique from the article really highlights an issue with AI generated work that I think GPT is running into as well, as soon as the wonder of it being generated by a computer wears off and people start to scrutinize it more, you start to see the WTF moments that our brain happily pastes over on first viewing.

Mainstream entertainment has been lowest common denominator fluff forever, though. I kind of like the idea of AI replacing artists who create generic pablum.

Mostly those artists are just trying to get a paycheck like any other worker though. It's the producers/management who make the decisions and set the scene for drivel.

Maybe the financing and production decision people should be replaced by AI.

If you want lowest common denominator fluff, look at fanfic. Those authors are making their own decisions.

I predict fanfic co-created with AI tools - and it's not going to be any worse than unaugmented human fanfic.

20 years ago I was heavy involved in a number of fanfic communities.

AI seeded with fanfiction.net would be mind bendingly horriblawesome.

I don’t know if I’ve posted this here, so I might just be repeating myself, but the movie/special effects industry is in a crisis right now, and AI could be the way forward.

The ridgid process of SFX means that certain choices need to be locked in pretty early on, and a director/producer who doesn’t understand this can and has bankrupt special effects studios.

The amount of output needed for things like the Marvel Empire also means that artists often get stuck being machines, where they do nothing but fire, or smoke effects, day in and day out, just smoke, always smoke, nothing but smoke. Which then leads to a crazy high rate of burn out, when they’re asked to push overtime doing smoke.

I can imagine a world where an AI understands how to integrate modifications into finished film, eliminating a ton of redo work. As well as one that’s been trained by the studio’s artists to do the best or signature smoke effects or other work, so that future animators can just say “Smoke here” and boom it looks professionally done.

Sounds like the application of the right amount of AI could reduce tedious chores, thus improving quality and speeding up output from animation studios. That's always been the best application of AI, IMO.

200-Year-Old Math Opens Up AI’s Mysterious Black Box
Fourier analysis provides ideas on how to quickly train more accurate neural networks

Quote:
The way in which neural networks reach conclusions has long been considered a mysterious black box—that is, a network could not also provide an explanation of how it arrived at the conclusion it did. Although researchers have developed ways to examine the inner workings of neural networks, these have often shown little success when it comes to the networks of many science and engineering applications, says study senior author Pedram Hassanzadeh, a fluid dynamicist at Rice University, in Houston.

In order to analyze a neural network designed to carry out physics, Hassanzadeh and his colleagues experimented with using a math technique often employed in physics. The method, known as Fourier analysis, is used to identify regular patterns in data across space and time.

Frontiers | Organoid intelligence (OI): the new frontier in biocomputing and intelligence-in-a-dish

Quote:
Recent advances in human stem cell-derived brain organoids promise to replicate critical molecular and cellular aspects of learning and memory and possibly aspects of cognition in vitro. Coining the term “organoid intelligence” (OI) to encompass these developments, we present a collaborative program to implement the vision of a multidisciplinary field of OI. This aims to establish OI as a form of genuine biological computing that harnesses brain organoids using scientific and bioengineering advances in an ethically responsible manner.
:tealdeer: They want to make computer processors out of organic (if lab-created) brain matter.

What could go wrong?! :awesome:

I watched about that. One interesting thing she said was that training a human to recognize a new category of things takes about ten examples, whereas training a state-of-the-art neural network takes ten million examples, and preferably more.

1,100+ notable signatories just signed an open letter asking 'all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months' | TechCrunch

Quote:
Contemporary AI systems are now becoming human-competitive at general tasks, and we must ask ourselves: Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth? Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones? Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us? Should we risk loss of control of our civilization? Such decisions must not be delegated to unelected tech leaders. Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.
The Singularity ...

While searching for that story, I found this, and I was like "oh it already has a wikipedia entry?"

But no, that's the one from 2015.

Entirely unforeseeable, all this was.

AI-controlled US military drone ‘kills’ its operator in simulated test | US military | The Guardian
Quote:
No real person was harmed
they say,
Quote:
but artificial intelligence used ‘highly unexpected strategies’ in test to achieve its mission and attacked anyone who interfered
Namely...
Quote:
“The system started realising that while they did identify the threat, at times the human operator would tell it not to kill that threat, but it got its points by killing that threat. So what did it do? It killed the operator. It killed the operator because that person was keeping it from accomplishing its objective,” he said, according to a blogpost.

“We trained the system – ‘Hey don’t kill the operator – that’s bad. You’re gonna lose points if you do that’. So what does it start doing? It starts destroying the communication tower that the operator uses to communicate with the drone to stop it from killing the target.”
No one could have foreseen this.

Quote:
Hamilton, who is an experimental fighter test pilot, has warned against relying too much on AI and said the test shows “you can’t have a conversation about artificial intelligence, intelligence, machine learning, autonomy if you’re not going to talk about ethics and AI”.

...

“We must face a world where AI is already here and transforming our society,” he said. “AI is also very brittle, ie, it is easy to trick and/or manipulate. We need to develop ways to make AI more robust and to have more awareness on why the software code is making certain decisions – what we call AI-explainability.”
