The end of official support of vBulletin 3
December 28, 2017:
vBulletin 3.X End of Life - vBulletin Community Forum
vBulletin 4.X Publishing Suite End of Life - vBulletin Community Forum
"While we will strive to support the latest version, we do not foresee any further development of the series."
Seems like they will only be doing security patches and the like.
Our board software will still run, and we can use it for as long as we can get compatible versions of PHP and MySQL. Since both are open-source, that should not be much of a problem.
If we wish to move on to other messageboard software, which might we choose?

Payware: vBulletin, XenForo, Invision Power Board, ...
Open-source: phpBB, Simple Machines Forum, myBB, Vanilla Forums (?), ...
My own choices: if payware, XenForo, if open-source, phpBB

It's not a problem if you can configure your own server, but if you buy one of the cheaper types of hosting plan you usually have to accept whatever version(s) of PHP and MySQL the hosting company provides. Most of them don't update to the latest bleeding edge versions right away and they usually offer legacy support of the older versions in parallel with their newest offering. The problem comes either when you want to change to a new hosting company or a few years down the line if you stick with the one you already use.
There are a lot of custom patches on If and when we make the jump to a different software we'll either lose a lot of the custom features or it will be lots of work for the admins to migrate those features.

That being said, Xenforo has come a long way in their feature set. I was just playing with a demo and they have a lot of cool stuff (like working media and resource add-ons that would replace our photo gallery and "library" sections) I didn't immediately notice anything we don't have except the custom ignore features. They even have smilie search! Does anyone think it would be worth considering a move?

Re: The end of official support of vBulletin 3
The licences for XenForo (with the media and resource add-ons) are about $300/year. Does our (obsolete) vBulletin 3.8.2 still incur any licence costs? I see that the copyright notice at the bottom of the page says 'Copyright ©2000 - 2022, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.'

Re: The end of official support of vBulletin 3
I’m on a board that transited to Xenforo a couple years ago. It was very smooth transition from the userbase. The Ignore tool was weak and I sponsored an add on to buff it up some. But that add on has its own problems.
Main need in a transition here would be to leave this archive in place for searching as I don’t think it’s possible to move the content.

Nope, we bought the license outright. In fact I think I bought a license for a newer version at some point (4 or 5?) and we never switched.

That would be a deal-breaker for me but I'm sure we could write our own migration script if needed.

Re: The end of official support of vBulletin 3
Interesting that the vBulletin copyright notice says 2022. Presumably, the Jelsoft version running just displays the current year? I've found some forums running (newer?) versions of vBulletin that just say, for example, 'Powered by vBulletin® Copyright © 2013 vBulletin Solutions, Inc. All rights reserved.'

Re: The end of official support of vBulletin 3
Oh yeah, it must just be grabbing the current year.
