Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
I'd probably recognize a dozen of his songs but there's no way I'd be able to pin one to him.

How was he only 81? He seemed like an old man in the 80s.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
He didn't look all that young even in the late 60s. He's looking like a bearded Glen Campbell in this teevee appearance.

See? I had literally no idea the Lebowski hallucination song was Kenny Rogers.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
I keep telling Matlock we need to go to El Chapultapec soon, but we just haven't gotten around to it. I haven't been for a long long time, and he's never been. And I know this isn't a huge surprise, or the biggest tragedy of this pandemic. I mean, he was 89 years old. But it does sort of drive home how much everything is going to change. I've been worried about El Chapultapec itself for a while, too, but I thought the biggest threat was gentrification.
And I'm worried that when society comes out of this, the only businesses that will have the resources to start up again are going to be big behemoth chains. The world is going to lose a whole lot of small, independent, and local culture.
Like this.

RIP Bill Withers. That man had the smoothest, sweetest voice ever.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Wallace Roney 1960–2020 One of the world’s leading jazz trumpet players is a coronavirus casualty at 59
Quote:
Wallace Roney, a star trumpeter—and the only trumpeter ever to study personally with Miles Davis—who built a 40-plus-year career chasing the cutting edge of jazz, died on the morning of March 31 at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey. He was 59.
|
The Times also has a decent write-up for him. He came to Newport more than once in the recent past, but I didn't go on those days for a variety of reasons, figuring I would just catch him "next time..."
RIP Wallace Roney
With the Tony Williams Lifetime in 1989
In an excerpt from a longer interview, talking about playing with Art Blakey, Elvin Jones & Tony Williams
After Miles died in '91, he played as part of a tribute to Davis with the Second Great Quintet: Herbie Hancock on piano, Wayne Shorter on saxophone and Ron Carter, bass, with Tony Williams on drums and of course, Roney on trumpet.*

More recently, at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2012 with Joey DeFrancesco, Robben Ford, Omar Hakim, Darryl Jones and Rick Margitza
Music from his 59th birthday weekend -- May 24, 2019 at the Jazz Forum in Tarrytown NY.
