In the Misty Water-Colored Memories department, I spent an inordinate amount of time today rummaging through this thread, started and fueled by one of the dumbest motherfuckers we've ever seen 'round these parts.

It's mildly amusing for me as a white Brit to observe (wryly of course) white Australians (stereotype: uncultured, wiped out their aboriginal natives) arguing with white Americans (stereotype: do I need to point this out) about racism.
Then again, white Brit ... (stereotype: 20th century: football hooligans; now: Nigel Farage). We had to go to other countries to wipe out their natives.

Touché.
But even by British standards, that was quite a while ago.
"Britons think 100 miles is a long way. Americans think 100 years is a long time."
Plus, it was them other guys what done it, them Angles and Jutes and Danes. * JoeP reckons he has enough Norman and Scots and Shetland ancestors to pick any side of any given fence
Plus, eradication or marginalisation of languages killing most of the people. Have you tried learning Welsh! All that mutation? They naturally chose to speak English.
Hey, it's quite easy to feel persecuted and defensive isn't it?
Help! I'm being oppressed!

The 1800s aren't that long ago.

Most of the Native American population decline was due to disease, but point taken.
But I also rather doubt that pushing the Celtic people into the more marginal areas of the islands and oppressing them was without consequences for the share of the population. I also believe there were various events that did involve violence towards those groups.
Have you tried learning English? The spelling makes no sense, half the verbs are irregular, sometimes prepositions are prepositions and sometimes they combine with verbs to make totally random meanings, you have weird rules about ordering adjectives and you have weird rules about negation and...

"A 'Bummel'," I explained, "I should describe as a journey, long or short, without an end; the only thing regulating it being the necessity of getting back within a given time to the point from which one started. Sometimes it is through busy streets, and sometimes through the fields and lanes; sometimes we can be spared for a few hours, and sometimes for a few days. But long or short, but here or there, our thoughts are ever on the running of the sand. We nod and smile to many as we pass; with some we stop and talk awhile; and with a few we walk a little way. We have been much interested, and often a little tired. But on the whole we have had a pleasant time, and are sorry when 'tis over."

I re-read the thread too and I miss livius, where is she?

I dropped an entire bag of sumac on the floor last night, so I went to order some more, and as I was typing in the URL for Penzeys, Google suggested "Penzeys Trump letter," so of course, I went ahead and read about that first.
Then I went back and ordered that sumac plus like six other things.
