Study Finds White Americans Believe They Experience More Racism Than African Americans : Political Blind Spot

There’s a saying that “the new racism is to deny that racism exists.” If that is the case, it may explain a study conducted by researchers from Tufts University’s School of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School. Their findings claim that self-described white Americans believe they have “replaced blacks” as the primary victims of racial discrimination in contemporary America.

The authors say that their study highlights how the expectations of a “post-racial” society, predicted or imagined in the wake of Barack Obama’s presidency, has far from been achieved.

The study finds that while both Caucasian and African Americans agree that anti-black racism has decreased over the last 60 years, whites believe that anti-white racism has increased. Moreover, the study finds that the majority of Caucasians believe that anti-white racism is a “bigger problem” than what African Americans face.

Tufts Associate Professor of Psychology Samuel Sommers, PhD is the co-author of the article “Whites See Racism as a Zero-sum Game that They Are Now Losing,” from the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science. He comments that “It’s a pretty surprising finding when you think of the wide range of disparities that still exist in society, most of which show black Americans with worse outcomes than whites in areas such as income, home ownership, health and employment.”

Ohio Fox News anchor Kristi Capel didn’t know Lady Gaga had a “gorgeous voice,” but as we learn in a recent Fox 8 brief, that’s hardly the most damaging thing that Capel doesn’t know.

While recapping the Oscars, Capel showed a clip from Lady Gaga’s Sound of Music medley performance and explained that she’s used to a different kind of Gaga performance.

The awestruck anchor commented: “It’s hard to really hear her voice with all the jigaboo music — whatever you want to call it — jigaboo!”

I lol every time I read it. Her defense against the social media backlash was that she didn't know it was a real word that had meaning.

My impression is that she was looking for a suitable term to describe Lady Gaga's music and she picked "jigaboo music" without thinking too much about what that means. I'm not sure the term applies to Gaga's music, so she doesn't seem to be using it in the correct context.

I'm willing to bet that she's got a racist in the family that's used the term to describe any dance music and it unfortunately it stuck with her.

Sucks to be her, but this isn't the worst thing in the world. I love the reaction of the cohost, that laughter has to be from the shock of hearing such an inappropriate term on air.

I've actually never heard the term Jigaboo.
Which is why I wouldn't randomly use it on a news report when describing someone else!
(especially when it clearly has a derogatory sound to it).

I think I know the word from that song from Hair, but I don't know that I've heard people in real life using it. So I could see that maybe if she'd heard some shitty old racist regularly calling a type of music that, she might really think it was just a name for some music genre.

The skinheads in my CO high school used it all the time, maybe even exclusively instead of other slurs..shortened to "Jig" usually. I thought it must be pretty common seeing as how my school was tiny and had exactly 2 non-white people.

I never hear it in the South.

I've heard the term a lot, unfortunately -- mostly from my Dad and his redneck compatriots. Also, I remember the use of "Jig" in a couple older movies, such as this scene from Enter The Dragon:

I've used the term quoted, i.e. referring to other people's use, or to reference the word itself. I'm indifferent to using a reference to inappropriate terms.

Has anybody heard a formal apology from the newscaster? I think there should have been one by now.
