I have a pair of those. They work great. Haven't needed them so far this winter but maybe in the next couple of days.
So far this winter hasn't been that bad snow wise. We've had some very cold weather and some snow, but the totals from each storm haven't been that impressive and nothing has stuck around. Even that storm that hit Atlanta pretty much missed us. The wind and cold maybe worse than normal, the snowfall not so much. Tomorrow we may get an actual storm with significant accumulation. Otherwise, I've not had to get the snow shovel out a single time.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
I have a problem I've never had before. The end of one of my downspouts is buried in snow. The roof right above it gets enough sunlight that the snow is melting off. I noticed the other day that there was ice caught in the branches of my lilac right next to it, but didn't know what to do about it. Looking closer I saw that the bend in the spout had icicles hanging, like the water had been seeping out there. Today when I looked the entire downspout is covered in ice pretty much from the gutter down.
I have no idea how much I need to worry about this and whether there's even anything I can do. To lift the spout above the snow would put it higher than the bendy bit anyway and might not help. Short of taking a hair dryer outdoors, I'm at a loss. Also, the snow between it and the sidewalk is much higher than my boots so I really don't want to walk over there, especially to do something that might not help.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
I had to drive up to Invergordon, Scotland (500 miles) yesterday. I finished the job today and was heading back home, but it was fucking snowing on the main A9 road that runs south from Inverness.
So I decided to stop for the night, near Stirling, and finish my journey tomorrow.
I don't know why Scotland has to be all snooty and have snow - why can't they just have floods like the rest of the UK?

Shovel the snow away from the downspout and it might warm up in the sun.
Otherwise, blowtorch.
I've tapped downspouts with a rubber mallet before and the ice breaks and slides out.
But seriously, blowtorch is more funner.
The problem isn't the gutters or ice, but the potential for ice damming on the roof.

5" of snow with an inch of ice on top? Chili's made, cornbread's made, brownies are cooking and the whiskey is on the counter. Let's do this.

after 3 weeks of -20°C to -30°C... warmth is in sight.
-20 right now, -10 tomorrow, -3 Thursday. that -3 and sunny is going feel downright tropical, and right in time for the long weekend too. I'm pulling out my ice fishing gear.

Insanely windy here right now. And although it's not raining right now, the rain is relentless in some areas. We're quite high up, so not in trouble, but people like this are:
They're saying some places won't be fully drained until MAY

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
I hope the power stays on down there in the south. Here they've fixed most of the old stuff and buried it after each storm. So the power rarely goes out in the cities. The small towns can be out for days and rural areas for months.

My sister in law was without power a couple of years ago during a storm so they moved in with my in-laws. After 2 days the power went out at their place for 2 weeks. But the family stayed because they could run a small generator a couple hours a day to do basic things and they had a gas fireplace that ran without electricity.
2 weeks at the in-laws with limited power or frozen at home without power. Hmmm, tough choice there.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
We are having a bad storm - Kilkenny has declared an emergency and is telling peopel to stay indoors. Apparently there were so many trees down on main roads that they cannot clear them up fast enough. I had to drive around half a dozen myself on my way home. This is as bad as I have ever seen it here.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
I'm going to say 8-12" of snow. 8" out in the yard. 12" in my driveway. More where the plows left windrows at the bottom.

I've been reluctant to speak up because I didn't want to jinx it but ... Nashville has largely been spared the mayhem hitting the rest of The South. If only I weren't working today; it's so beautiful outside! 48 F and sunny; no precipitation in the forecast until tomorrow. (70% then but tra-la-la I'm not thinking about that now.)

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
I wasn't even expecting anything this week. I mean, last week there was a little in places around me but nothing happened where I was. So I didn't even pay no mind to impending weather reports. When I looked out yesterday morning (I say yesterday, but I mean "before I went to sleep this morning" at 3am or something I saw that it was snowing. It snowed some more while I slept and then I thought maybe I should have planned to shelter in place as the saying goes. I wasn't very successful at that, mostly on account of needing to eat and such. Now it's just white and sloppy out there.

Today the temperature in Flint got above freezing for the first time since January 14th. Almost made a solid month.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
In Oxford, it continues to rain. All the fields around here are flooded, but the fire crews have managed to pump out the two flood-prone main roads in the city, keeping them open.
That said, more rain is forecast - maybe it will get worse, before it gets better. The trains are seriously disrupted, which is making getting to/from work a pain.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
The volunteer and paid fire brigades in my area have been battling out of control bushfires for the past month pretty much non-stop until yesterday. Then the entire peninsula got a really good and desperately needed soaking. I thought, good - now the firies can go home at last. Wrong. They've been switched to pumping water out of houses and sandbagging around them.
The last time I saw snow was in the early 1970s when I went skiing in the Australian Alps. I lived in Sydney at the time, which received the only snowfall in living memory a year before, but I was out of town at the time.
Anyway, we are nearing the end of summer. I don't anticipate many more 40°C+ days before next November.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
We're supposed to have received the last of the series of heavy storms we've been suffering - at least for a while anyway - which should give some respite and allow the floods to recede a little.
