Default Parking lots are the greatest place for archaeologists, apparently

Mental Floss ran this list and it looks like Richard III is in fine company under inches of asphalt. The coolest one so far is the palace of Queen Helena of Adiabene. How the hell do you lose an entire pal...no wait, they lost cities all the time. I wonder what else is under parking lots...

Here's a bit more on the palace of Queen Helena.

Okay I wasn't gonna do this, but since you brought up that particular one again, the 'City of David' wasn't entirely a parking lot, it's an Israeli settlement in occupied East Jerusalem: Israel bulldozes Palestinian community center, making way for a 'City of David' visitor center

Israel finances settler "sound and light show" in Silwan

This is one example of Israel using archeology to stake its claim on Palestinian territory: East Jerusalem: Six Voices - Yonathan Mizrahi | B'Tselem

Quote:
Like so many parts of East and West Jerusalem, the village of Silwan is located on a site that bears religious and historical significance. According to the Bible, this valley is the very area where King David walked some 3,000 years ago. Unfortunately, the rich archeological discoveries in the area are being used as a political tool to oust Palestinians.

I would have named this thread, "Parking Lots Are the Best Friend I Ever Had."

If Jimmy Hoffa's remains are ever found, it will probably be underneath a parking lot.

Hang on - if that is valid reasoning, then the Benelux Mafia should get together and buy a bulldozer. There are hundreds of interesting bits of our historical heritage buried under some pretty pricey real-estate in the states. Broadway for a start.

Not to mention that the Greeks and the Iranians could dig up most of the Middle East and Anatolia.

This is an excellent example of an academic discipline acquiring real-world political relevance. Kudos to the Israelis for rescuing archeology from the irrelevance of moldy museums and the sterile halls of academia.
